Re: pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow

The POP server is not responding at all with any of my email accounts.

I just spoke with AT&T. They say that the problem is due to "so many people signing up."

How rediculious. They are forcing all users to switch to their SSL servers. Why can't they accommodate it?

When I saw your message Sandpipers I tried my email again. And you're right, mine is down again so I switched back to the "old" settings. Email is working again. I guess I'll wait a week or two and try again.

There is an irony here. I have no problems connecting to the SSL server, but don't use that email account except for testing purposes.

My router logs show that I connect to this server address: pop1.sbc.mail.vip.sp1.yahoo.com - 216.252.120.29. I wonder if you were routed to a different server that wasn't working properly.

If I knew how to find which address I connect to I would check it out. I have a D_Link DI-624 router and when I go into the log all I see are lines (20 pages worth) with UDP/ICMP/TCP packets dropped at various addresses. I have no idea what I am looking at.

Sorry,

Eeyore

This problem seems to come and go. I've noticed slowness/non-responsiveness of the POP3 server off and on for several days now. Just now it was fast as ever.

P.S. When it gets slow, increasing my 'Server Timeout' to 2 minutes helps to get my incoming mail instead of erroring out.

P.P.S. Plus there's always webmail.

Here in Modesto, Calif. it comes and goes. Sometimes so SLOW it takes forever and one or the other account will time out. Then the next few times it's back to full speed, then again really slow or times out. Been doing this for around 2 weeks but worse the last few days.

Same here in Chico and it is getting frustrating. Called and complained and all the tech would/could say is that they do not show a problem and that they do not support Thunderbird. I told him to consult this forum and then he would know that it is either at&t's or Yahoo's servers. If at&t is unwilling to admit there is a problem, maybe it is time to switch to Sonic.net!!

Mail Pop-Ups AGAIN

let's start having the dsl numbers posted in direct please

Will need the following

1.) Address causing the problems, if multiples please list them
2.) DSL TN
3.) Mail client you are using
4.) copy of the error if you can get it.
5.)alternate contact number
6.) Include if the problem is happening with the web-based e-mail client as well.

For a topic header I had one created for the direct forum called [EMAIL-080107]

Start posting just that stuff there guys, and let's start tracking it down.

Thanks
david

I have seen the postings in Direct concerning the same problem that I am having; either slow or no connection. But I don't know what you are asking in your message.

1. What address are you asking for?
2. What is "DSL TN"?
3. Mail client I understand; OE right?
4. How can I get a copy of the error if it is slooow or times out?
5. What type of alternate contact number?

And I want to thank your for your help,

Eeyore

David,

Thanks for the reply. I probably did not make myself clear, so I will elaborate on the problem. I have 6 att/Yahoo email accounts. One is the primary account used by my modem as my User ID. I do not use this account for any other purpose. Two of the accounts are used for list servers and an additional account is used for craig's list. I use Thunderbird v1.5.0.12 as my email client and it is set to automatically download from the above 4 accounts. One of the remaining accounts is used as my ebay account and the last account is used as my general purpose email account. Thunderbird is set so that it does not automatically download from the last two accounts. I use Mail Washer Pro 5.3 as a spam filter and it is set to automatically monitor the account I use for ebay and the account I use as a general purpose account. It is set to check for new email every 60 minutes. I can also have Mail Washer check these two accounts at any time by clicking on the Check Mail button. I have Mail Washer set so that if sender's address is on my blacklist or on SpamCop or Spamhaus or the email satisfies one of my filters, the email is automatically deleted off of att/Yahoo's pop server. If the mail gets through and I then blacklist the sender, the email is marked for deletion and is deleted when I click on the button to cause Mail Washer to process the email. This means that Mail Washer must re-establish a connection with att/Yahoo's pop server. Recently, both Thunderbird and Mail Washer Pro have been timing out. Additionally, even if Thunderbird or Mail Washer do not time out they have been taking much longer to establish a connection. Once a connection is established it appears the mail download occurs at normal speed. The error message is that a connection has timed out or a connection could not be established. Although I did not make see a relationship earlier, the first indication of a problem was that after directing Mail Washer to delete the email that had been marked for deletion, Thunderbird would down load the same mail when I check these accounts. Although, I had not experienced this problem in the past, it is now clear that Mail Washer was having trouble connecting to att/Yahoo's pop server to delete the mail that had been marked for deletion. The pop server for all of my accounts is pop.att.yahoo.com @ port 995 and the smtp server is smtp.att.yahoo.com @ port 465. Both Thunderbird and Mail Washer Pro are set for SSL connections. The problem is intermittent but has been getting increasingly worse. If there is more specific information you need let me know.

Robert

Seems to be an ongoing problem. Two of the three computers at the house use OE6 and work so-so (very slowly sometimes) with the new settings. The third machine uses Outlook 2002 and will receive with SSL setting after a long delay, but won't send with the SSL setting at all. Hope this is just 'growing pains' with ATT/Yahoo. From what I understand, after Sept. 1 the non-SSL settings won't work at all. Bummer!

Helpful tip

@telnor.net

if you have outlook 2002 or older you need to upgrade your software at microsoft.com, office updates, to SP3 to be compatible with SSL encryption that at&t is using, and about the time response errors, something that may work for the moment, is on need to increase the time for the communication, on the Advance tab from More Settings option on the setup account screen, that will resolve these issues

Well, this really appears to be a wide spread problem.

I also use MailWasher to screen incoming emails, and have all settings correctly adjusted re: latest ATT emails re security. The problem continues to be severely overloaded email servers for att/yahoo, and that is the fix that is needed.

Hello ATT?

Same here in Benicia. Taking up to 5 minutes to connect to email.

I made the mistake of calling Tech Support. I got a hold of "Oscar" probably in New Dehli. After explaing the problem at length to Oscar, Oscar advised me that it was probably my router and OE configuration. Ok Oscar how come it does the same thing on XP Dial Up and with Vista running Windows Mail.

He put me on hold for 20 minutes and transferred me to a woman that tried to sell me a maintenance contract for $99 / year. When I said no she hung up.

Ahhhhh the joy of customer service!

Usually reasonably satisfied with what was Pacbell, then SBC, now AT&T. On home and office Windows XP machines, with both Outlook 3000 and Outlook Express, we get different error messages each time. Called AT&T customer support... After the usual "disconnect the router" and "remove and re-setup the email account" my problem is "escalated" to second-level support.

The support guy tells me that it's a problem with Yahoo, which provides email service to AT&T and that he has sent a trouble ticket to Yahoo. He says he's telling most people to change back to their settings that AT&T has been urging us to change from - In other words, change back to the non-ssl address.

Well something is recently overloaded or broken then. I've been on the "new" SSL settings for a couple of months and it's been fine. I received the "Email security enhancements - action required" email back in mid-May, and made the changes by the end of May.

Only in the last week or so has POP3 response time gone to hell.
