Re: pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow

For Outlook Express you need only one change.
select:
1. Tools
2. Accounts
3. your att yahoo account
4. Properties
5. Advanced tab
6. deselect(uncheck)"This server requires a secure connection (SSL)." The port should revert back to 110 automatically.
7. select Apply.

Sorry, I left out of the previous post that you should deselect SSL for Incomming Mail (POP3).

Even w/o SSL.....

Ok,

It is better without the SSL, BUT it is not as good as it used to be a few weeks ago even with SSL!!

Something is seriously overloaded at Yahoo mail.

ATT/Yahoo HELLO??.....Can you hear me now??

Has been slow here for a couple weeks now, too... another user from Chico.

Swapping the SSL settings no longer provides a 'fix', since I'm sure that those servers are getting pretty overloaded too, with all those switching back.

At least it's not my e-mail client, which is what I thought the problem was.

Many thanks to "Helpful Tip." Installing MS Office SP3 did fix the SSL sending problem, although ATT/Yahoo is still incredibly slow to connect and transfer, either with SSL ports or the old ones. Fix it, someone!

I have been getting urgent emails from at&t saying you must change over to the new settings now, but based on these reports, I don't want to do it until things get fixed.

I started having the problems with att.yahoo on Aug 1. I still have my old pacbell.net accounts. When ATT first advised of changes two months ago, I updated to the new SSL pop/smtp settings in Outlook 2003. No problems until Aug 1 - then no receiving email on my main or sub-accounts. ATT tech support first said my profiles corrupted; deleted; rebuilt multiple times; same problems.

Today, ATT acknowledged a problem - said it was specific to Outlook 2003 having problems with SSL. I pointed out that my Gmail settings work with SSL in Outlook and that my ATT settings worked fine for two months. ATT still blames MS Outlook.

My solution? I set up my Gmail account to send/receive from my ATT acct.
Log into Gmail.
Go to Settings.
Go to Accounts.
Choose Get mail from other accounts:
Enter your ATT email address and pop info; be sure to use correct SSL POP port 995.
Gmail will send a verification email.
Once done, set up Gmail to enable POP.
Then I set up Outlook to use my Gmail account and deleted the ATT acct.

I am now receiving my ATT email in Outlook via Gmail. I can still send from the ATT account, but I'm likely to completely migrate to Gmail. What's great is that I can still receive email at my old ATT/Pacbell email address for anyone who still has the old address.

Hope this helps some others...

That's BALONEY. I've experienced the very same problems with ATTyahoo sbcglobal in Thunderbird.

It all started with the switch over to ATT from SBC, and now as you have noted has magnified to being ridiculous.

I've a sinking feeling that ATT will come up with a "fix" in form of a "preferred customer fee".

Could I be so wrong?

I wish that I had read this forum before spending hours on the phone with att. First it was my line, then no, it was my router, is my modem near any other electronics!!! Then I was transferred to their premium tech support (which I could barely hear the guy warn me that I would be charged...you see, they had just experience a power outage and all of their computers and phones were down and just coming back up!!!)

Yep, they were not interested to know that my ssl pop gmail access (which used identical settings as the att.yahoo) was working fine. My email was working fine with the ssl settings until a couple of weeks ago. My connection speed is consistently excellent. I am furious to realize that they were deliberately lying to - I guess - avoid comping some subscription time or telling people to go back to the old 110/25 settings. Man!

Well, a big caveat to this "solution" which made it unworkable for me. Gmail's spam filter cannot be disabled - so you still have to use the web-based email to review spam. I have a well-trained and accurate filter that I use via Outlook and I don't trust Gmail's filter to rely on it. Nor do I want to have to load/sync all my contacts with Gmail to ensure that they're on my Gmail whitelist. Back to the drawing board regrettably.

Even without the new SSL settings in ATT/Yahoo, I continue to experience slow or errored downloads. And ATT tech support are, as someone else pointed, out liars - and the one I had today was downright nasty.

This is a Looooooooooongshot, but for the past two hours I began receiving/sending emails via pop.att.yahoo.com (with the new "secure" settings in place) normally. This started happening right after I disabled the time synchronization feature! (Found by double-clicking the current time display, and clicking on the "Internet Time" tab.)

There may be no connection at all, but it would be interesting to see if this works for others.

Hi, me again. So, as I stated above, my Gmail solution wasn't workable, due to Gmail not allowing anything from their spam folder to be downloaded. Well, I found a workaround.

After setting up your ATT/Yahoo account to be picked up in Gmail, do the following:

Download and install FreePops.
In Outlook, set up a new email account using these settings:

Name: Gmail Spam (or whatever you want)
Email address: YourGmailAcctName@gmail.com?folder=spam
Incoming Server/POP: localhost
Outgoing Server/SMTP: localhost
User Name: YourGmailAcctName@gmail.com?folder=spam
Password: Your Gmail Password

More Settings: Outgoing server requires authetication
Advanced:
POP3 2000 (do not check SSL box)
SMTP 25 (do not check SSL box)

Save these settings. Now, Outlook should be able to download your Spam folder from Gmail and you can process your own Spam.

If this works, be sure to add FreePops to the StartUp folder in Windows, so that it is running when you try to open Outlook.

All very convoluted, but at least it avoids ATT/Yahoo servers and allows you to control/filter your own spam without having to log onto Gmail.

BTW, ATT & Yahoo suck a**. Good luck all.

Why aren't the Tier 1 and Tier 2 techs aware of this problem? Or at least admitting that it's not a customer's problem?

A client's OE client has been hung up on "securing" for up-to-a-few-minutes for about a week. She has called tech support 3 times in the past 2 days and gotten 3 different responses - none of them blaming Yahoo.

Here are some of the answer's/remedies she's been told:

1. Open Internet Explorer before opening Outlook Express
2. It's a "Microsoft problem"
3. Do a System Restore back one week (she said "no thanks")
4. When talking to Tier 1 she asked if there was a known problem, which they wouldn't acknowledge. Tier 2 acknowledged their was a problem.
5. It's a McAfee problem (she doesn't have McAfee - unless now McAfee is doing Yahoo's server-side mail scanning?)

Maybe this is AT&T's way of trying to sell more of their paid tech support?

Every time something that seems like a major problem is reported in these forums people start trying to pin some sinister motive on AT&T for why nobody seems to know about it in Support. I think the reality is that AT&T doesn't have a system (or a very good one) in place to coordinate these scattered reports into one place so that someone up the food chain can see a growing pattern and address it.

Look at some of the really big things that we've seen like the "lag monster" in SoCal a few years ago or even the more recent router overloads in CA. It took many many days for the techs here on BBR to collect data from the members, consolidate it and pass it along before anyone higher up would believe it wasn't on the customer side.

I'm sure some of this is because, with millions of customers, things like this email problem aren't even on the radar screen. How many users do sbcglobal email online and would never see it? How many don't even use their sbcglobal email? How many pay any attention to how long it takes for their email to download? Case in point...I have dozens of clients with AT&T DSL. Know how many have reported having this email problem? ONE!

Agreed. It's no conspiracy by AT&T. They changed to SSL and something went wrong at the yahoo end I believe. Mine has been working now perfectly for the last about 15 hours. Whatever it was is now fixed.

I've had AT&T/SBC DSL for what, 6 or 7 years, and I've had email problems exactly twice, this current one being the second. Everything was back to normal within a couple of days; I didn't even bother reporting it. I've had connection issues exactly twice too. Again, without reporting it, it was back to normal within a couple days. I don't think there's a conspiracy in the works. It there is, it's not working as I'm quite content.

If only 1 or 2 out of 10 people with a problem complain or otherwise bring it to AT&T's attention, it's only natural for AT&T to underestimate the scope of the problem.
