NETDESIGNZ : First let me say it's a pleasure to find this issue being addressed in the forum here. I am a new user (signed up tonight) and from Michigan, USA. I own an I.T. consulting company servicing residential and commercial customers.

A little background - The timeout issue, among others, has been ongoing for several months now. Since our local branch of ATT (formerly SBCGLOBAL) instructed users to change their POP and SMTP servers. I have been on the phone with 1st level support (India) multiple times and EVERY TIME not once have any of them had any clue that the problem is anything more than user error even going as far as having our customers completely uninstall AV software. Second level is aware there is a problem, but after so much time having gone by, I'm convinced they still don't know exactly where the problem lies or how to fix it. If it was ONLY the timeout issues, server load would make sense. Considering the other problems however, I personally suspect router/routers misconfiguration... especially because of the new security.

The "other issues" consist of:

"no such user here" bounced messages from ATT/Yahoo when sending to an email account in one of their domains from outside of them. IE: sent from a non-ATT/Yahoo email address TO an ATT/Yahoo email address 550 bounces while the same address is reachable from any of their internal domains.

Being unable to send/receive using the new secure mail servers.

Being unable to send while being able to receive using the new secure mail servers.

Being unable to send to several external (Outside of ATT/Yahoo) email addresses but still being able to receive mail from them.

ALL customers are using a flavor of Outlook Express or Outlook thrice checked for configuration accuracy.

These are the main issues our customers are experiencing. The timeout issue I do think is being caused by server load because it comes and goes, but it's just the tip of the iceberg and it's not going to go away until someone who knows what their doing identifies the problematic routers and correctly reconfigures them.

My 2 cents.
--
Net Designz Consulting, Michigan, USA

Although migrating accounts is probably not accurate, integrating and updating hardware is probably more likely. In all probability this is why there are glitches going on all over the place. They are having their own problems getting the job done. It's not out of the realm of possibility that there are going to be logistics problems between them and Yahoo. I understand the annoyance but it will just take time and patience for it to all get ironed out. If being patient with a large scale network change makes me a fanboy, then so be it I guess. But I've had to endure the same kind of annoyances in the past with other ISPs when they've been gobbled up by the bigger fish. I had one that tried to bill me when they bought out the ISP I had been with. As a last resort, I wasn't convinced that the issue wasn't me because I am using some dated software (Outlook 2000), so I formatted my whole computer and reinstalled everything fresh. Guess what?
baj475 : David,

Thanks for the reply. I probably did not make myself clear, so I will elaborate on the problem. I have 6 att/Yahoo email accounts. One is the primary account used by my modem as my User ID. I do not use this account for any other purpose. Two of the accounts are used for list servers and an additional account is used for craig's list. I use Thunderbird v1.5.0.12 as my email client and it is set to automatically download from the above 4 accounts. One of the remaining accounts is used as my ebay account and the last account is used as my general purpose email account. Thunderbird is set so that it does not automatically download from the last two accounts. I use Mail Washer Pro 5.3 as a spam filter and it is set to automatically monitor the account I use for ebay and the account I use as a general purpose account. It is set to check for new email every 60 minutes. I can also have Mail Washer check these two accounts at any time by clicking on the Check Mail button. I have Mail Washer set so that if sender's address is on my blacklist or on SpamCop or Spamhaus or the email satisfies one of my filters, the email is automatically deleted off of att/Yahoo's pop server. If the mail gets through and I then blacklist the sender, the email is marked for deletion and is deleted when I click on the button to cause Mail Washer to process the email. This means that Mail Washer must re-establish a connection with att/Yahoo's pop server. Recently, both Thunderbird and Mail Washer Pro have been timing out. Additionally, even if Thunderbird or Mail Washer do not time out they have been taking much longer to establish a connection. Once a connection is established it appears the mail download occurs at normal speed. The error message is that a connection has timed out or a connection could not be established. Although I did not make see a relationship earlier, the first indication of a problem was that after directing Mail Washer to delete the email that had been marked for deletion, Thunderbird would down load the same mail when I check these accounts. Although, I had not experienced this problem in the past, it is now clear that Mail Washer was having trouble connecting to att/Yahoo's pop server to delete the mail that had been marked for deletion. The pop server for all of my accounts is pop.att.yahoo.com @ port 995 and the smtp server is smtp.att.yahoo.com @ port 465. Both Thunderbird and Mail Washer Pro are set for SSL connections. The problem is intermittent but has been getting increasingly worse. If there is more specific information you need let me know.

Robert

I once played with them for four days of no connection to the internet only to find that the whole area had been out; but tech support didn't know about it.
