This is a fresh install, brand spaning new router.
I just tried to flash the tomato firmware and the installation or flash is going pretty pretty badly. I went through the steps of pushing the reset button on the router, plugging the computer into one of the LAN ports with a cable, going to the control panel to make the TCP/IP settings just as the tomato instructions say. I unplugged the router and plugged it back in waiting for the diagnostic light to turn off. When I double click on the whr_install.bat file, I get this black cmd.exe window that repeatedly says:
Can't read from local file tomato.trx -i 192.168.11.1
over and over again very quickly, endlessly.
If I run "tftp -i 192.168.11.1 put code.trx", I see the quickest flash of the black command screen and then it is gone.
Secondly, I am writing this from my laptop which is running on the wi-fi connection, but my desktop will not access the internet via a wired LAN connection from the router. If I go to the 192.168.11.1 configuration screen from the wireless laptop I see a GUI that must be the stock Buffalo GUI. I can also access the same page from th wired desktop, but I can't access the web from the wired desktop, only from the wireless laptop ?!?!?
Please help I need this router up soon, I have a lot of work to do. |

| reply to brjoon1021 OK.
Here is where I am at: I am using the Buffalo firmware, it is set to DHCP and everything works. I want to use the Tomato firmware. The installation instructions SUCK.
If I read them correctly I need to change the configuration of my NIC to a static IP address and change the subnet mask and the other thing.
From there, it is just as I described above in my original post. What the hell? |

| I just did this couple of days back. Just like you, the instructions, although seemingly simple, could not successfully lead me to update the firmware. Then I came across a little note of alternative update method from another frustrated user who very helpfully had detailed the steps.
Basically, I had to put a switch between my wired laptop and the router and I had to use linksys tftp following the same steps as before and I was successful. I would suggest that you try it too. |

WTF ? are you using the install bat? mine worked fine I just made sure the trx file and the install bat were in the same directory...I just put them both in a flash drive and went from there. oh one other thing mine timed out too on one of my routers..I just changed the cat5 to another lan port and it went right through -- Alltel DSL 3000/384 Netgear DG834G ADSL Modem/Router on 7 Boxes, 2 wired 5 wireless running 3 WRT54G's (Tomato v1.07 firmware) as wireless repeaters |

| reply to brjoon1021 Well, I took a different (cheaper) Buffalo right out of the box and had trouble with the tftp script. I then logged into the buffalo web gui and went through the mandatory wizard... just saying manual connection I think just to get through it. I went back to the script and it worked, although I paid more attention to the power off/on part also. |

It seems that you have just confirmed this pretty well. Since you failed to follow the simple instructions in the Tomato batch file, here they are again. Let me know which part you find confewzing.
Step one, unplug the power. Step two, press any key. Step three, connect the power. Step four, wait 2 minutes. Step five, reset to factory defaults with the reset switch and then login at 192.168.1.1 |

1 edit | have you seen the wiki ? In my paragraph above, which you take issue with, I merely paraphrase the wiki, point by point.
"I went through the steps of pushing the reset button on the router, plugging the computer into one of the LAN ports with a cable, going to the control panel to make the TCP/IP settings just as the tomato instructions say. Wiki for comparison:
Installing on a Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54S in Windows Warning: Be aware that Buffalo only has encrypted firmwares on their web site. You will not be able to revert back to Buffalo's firmware without an unencrypted version of their firmware.
The following is for an initial install on a Buffalo router. If you're already using a third-party firmware or just upgrading a Tomato firmware, try uploading any of the .bin files from the GUI.
1. Push the reset button for a few seconds to reset the configuration.
2. Plug your computer directly to the router. This will not work over a wireless connection.
3. Set your computer's ethernet card settings to: IP=192.168.11.2, mask=255.255.255.0, gateway=192.168.11.1. In Windows, you can set this by going to Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click your ethernet card, click properties, then TCP/IP.
4. Make sure the red diagnostic light isn't lit, unplug the power cable, wait, then re-plug. If you're using Windows, double-click on the whr_install.bat file (it will use ping and automatically use tftp at the right time) or use the following command: tftp -i 192.168.11.1 put code.trx
* You may have noticed that #4 sounds a lot like what I did. It is after pressing any key to continue that I get the repeating error message from the cmd screen that I initially listed. |

Guys I'm new here but I'm pulling my hair out trying to update this router so I can use WAP.
All it get is the following while using the batch file:
tftp -i 192.168.11.1 put tomato.trx 'tftp' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
In the txt file it mentions that tftp might need to be in abled but does not say how to do it. Also, Vista searches turn up zilch on tftp. PLEASE HELP! |

King Nine, if your using Vista, then you prolly don't have tftp installed. few people use it. WinXp installs it by default. you have to add it yourself. It's good that micrsoft wised up and not install in vista cuz worms can use it, ever heard of Blaster. Anyhow, I often package the tftp.exe WITH my firmware, the one that need it and DELETE it when done. It keeps my system slightly more safer.
Install it from vista, use it, then uninstall it or package it with your firmware and archive it somewhere else (not in the system path). |

| Assuming your router's IP is 192.168.11.1, in order to upload DD-WRT or Tomato via tftp, do this:
Type on the command prompt *before* pressing ENTER:
Then restart the router and as soon as the power light turns on, press ENTER (while you're still at the Command Prompt). The code.trx file will be uploaded successfully via tftp. :)
I've done it successfully on Buffalo and Linksys routers.
