AT&T email--Yahoo vs. Worldnet

I note on the ATT Yahoo POP server settings help page, that one of the domains using the pop.att.yahoo.com server is listed as MemberID@att.net.

att.net in the past has been used solely by AT&T Worldnet, the ISP started by AT&T long before the SBC takeover. Originally a dialup ISP, it now offers DSL via Covad, and perhaps other, vendors.

Is AT&T Yahoo also issuing att.net addresses to new customers?

I think that @att.net domain has been used for Worldnet customers, either dial up, DSL, or BYOA, who have now become AT&T-Yahoo customers and want to retain their Worldnet email addresses by transferring their email service from the Worldnet-operated servers to the Yahoo-operated servers.

Although other than saving money, for the life of me, I can't imagine why someone would want to cut the quality and reliability of their email service by doing that.

I just signed up for DSL a few weeks ago. The user ID and email address I was given was @att.net.

I just signed up for DSL and am retaining my att.net email. I was told I would go to the same URL and everything would be exactly the same. Not that I know enough about servers to say, but I would think if it's at the same URL, it's on the same server. No? Part of the point of keeping my email was to not have Yahoo.

To keep your @att.net accounts on the Worldnet-operated servers, you would have to pay $6/mo for the Bring-Your-Own-Access plan that they offer (or maybe only used to offer as I haven't checked recently if it is still available). I use that plan and the Worldnet servers are problem free compared to the Yahoo servers. I've seen maybe one brief outage in 5 years.

The other advantage of paying for that BYOA plan is you can still set up 25 MB personal web pages for each email account

You can't get at&t Yahoo! HSI without getting Yahoo!. But you don't have to use the Yahoo! SMTP servers. I just switched back to 'smtpauth.sbcglobal.net' after evaluating the function of the latest update to Mercury/32 (v.4.51), which added SSL capability to the SMTP relay client. I don't really need SSL, so 'smtpauth.sbcglobal.net' works well enough for me.

Alas, you do have to use the Yahoo! POP3 servers, and they appear to be really flaky at this time.

FWIW, my email domain is, 'pacbell.net'.

If you have AT&T Yahoo you don't have to pay anything to keep your @att.net e-mail accounts.

And you don't have to dial in the Worldnet servers to retrieve your @att.net e-mail. You can do it from your AT&T Yahoo account just fine.

I've been doing it for a couple years now.

You missed what I was saying in that statement:

To keep your @att.net accounts on the Worldnet-operated servers ...
If someone had moved their @att.net account as suggested by that FAQ, they wouldn't have been able to get their mail this past 10 days off the Yahoo-operated servers! The whole point of my statement is that you DON'T want to move from a reliable, secure, email service to a dysfunctional email provider, Yahoo!

If you don't want Yahoo! servers to handle your email, you don't want 'at&t Yahoo' HSI'. Or, for AT&T Worldnet users, you use 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' for your DSL connection, but you don't migrate your AT&T Worldnet ID to 'at&t Yahoo! HSI'.

Oh, I see. You mean the e-mail messages, not the account itself!

I read it, I just thought you meant 'to keep the account on the @att.net servers.'

I didn't understand you meant 'to keep the e-mail messages on the @att.net servers.'

I just signed up for DSL a few weeks ago. The user ID and email address I was given was @att.net.
I had a friend who signed up for AT&T Yahoo in June and she got an @att.net address. She signed up with those door-to-door sales men who were pushing DSL and satellite. She had never been a Worldnet subscriber.

Then, a coworker signed up for AT&T Yahoo in July and was given an @sbcglobal.net address. He tried to use the web site, but wound up calling in. (He was a win back from Cable and VOIP.) Although he never had DSL at his residence, he was a DSL small business customer at another address.

From what i know, the domain name @sbcglobal.net wont be available anymore. They are considered "Legacy Domain email address"
