Re: Slow mail servers?

said by latichever See Profile :

Anyone else experiencing slow response from the ATT mail servers to and from your pop3 client software the past few days?
I am slowly starting to move my stuff over to gmail. Google seems faster of late.

I just switched back to the old servers(non SSL and ports 25/110) and it seems to work fine for me.

You're right! Why didn't I think of that...

Interesting not many anti virus programs support SSL, wonder if something is amuck? Just a guess....

I'm not a serious techie but I don't say how they could blame it on anyone's local software. One week ago. Everything was fine, then all of a sudden we're all having these problems using many different email clients, in many different locations, on many different computers.

On one computer I have Windows Mail with the new yahoo address, and on the other I have OE still with the old snet address. It's a problem on both machines with, as others have noted, significantly more problems on outgoing than incoming.

Plus on one both of my machines I have another pop3, non yahoo server. It connects with no problem and its fast--like yahoo used to be.

So having another pop3, I think I'll call tech support armed with the ability to say it can't be my software since I'm not having problems with my other non-yahoo servers.

Not that that will do any good, but it's worth a shot.

Surely with all of us suddenly having this problem there must be some way to demand they fix what is apparently a system problem.

This has got to get better, performance of the mail servers is unacceptable at this time and has been for a while.

Back to normal here. I wonder if we'll ever find out the story behind this.

Well, "Bob" or "Tex" in India won't know what was wrong.
It was probably one of the ATT guys that help us out in the forum that got it fixed. I don't know what we'd do without those guys... without them, getting anything fixed would be an exercise in frustration. Thanks guys!!

I reported this trouble to Yahoo/ATT customer service. (You can find out how to do it, if you search the Yahoo site very carefully.)

The answer is a minor classic in unhelpful verbiage, IMO:

Dear Martin,

Thank you for contacting AT&T Internet Services E-mail Support.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing with the e-mail service as receiving e-mails has become noticeably slow. I recognize the importance of this concern, and I will be more than willing to provide you with the information that you need to address this concern.

It is not normal to receive your messages later after it was sent although this instance does happen on rare occasions. Most messages are usually delivered to your Mailbox within a few minutes but messages can sometimes be delayed while in transit due to problems on the e-mail server, heavy Internet traffic, or routing problems. Sometimes, delays can last for several hours or more.

I have checked our Network Bulletin to verify if there are any ongoing server outages that can cause this issue, and found none. However, Martin, we have been receiving similar reports regarding the same issue you are experiencing.

To confirm if this case is really caused by the AT&T Yahoo! Mail server, please access your AT&T Yahoo! Mail online and observe your e-mail responses.

To do this, please do the following steps:

1. Launch your web browser.
2. Access »att.yahoo.com/mail
3. Sign in with your complete AT&T Yahoo! e-mail address and password.
4. After signing in to your account, create a test e-mail and address it to test@sbcmailtest.com. Check if it takes a long time for the automated response to arrive.

If the message arrives immediately on your AT&T Yahoo! Mail, then it is likely that there are other factors that can prevent you from receiving your e-mails immediately on your mail client. For the meantime, I would advise you to disable your anti-virus and firewall settings.

Some security software allows you to restrict outbound as well as inbound communications between your e-mail programs and the Internet. In order for you to temporarily disable the software, you can right click on the firewall or anti-virus software icon and click on disable or turn off. The icon can be found usually on the system tray (the bottom right of your screen, the one next to the clock) or can be found on [Start] menu and [All Programs]. If you are not familiar in disabling your security applications, please contact your software vendor.

Please observe the activity of your e-mail service, and check if there will be any changes on the transit of your messages. In the unfortunate event that the issue continues, I would like to request that you please call us. My experience tells me that an intervention from our senior technicians is required to properly resolve this matter. Their input is very important because they have access, and would be able to configure the advance settings of your mail account. This way we can also pinpoint what exactly is causing this trouble.

We are truly grateful for your cooperation and continued patience with the multiple technical inconsistencies we have been experiencing. Know that we have your best interest in mind by ensuring that we address all your concerns in the most efficient manner. Please contact us and refer to Case ID 146861410. You can reach us at 1-877-722-3755; our technical support line is available 24/7.

Also, feel free to review our online support pages at »helpme.att.net where you can find answers to many of the most commonly asked questions.

I want to let you know that you may receive a survey, requesting that you rate the service you received from me. I ask that you please take a few minutes to fill this out and let my manager know how I am doing and how satisfied you are with the support you received from AT&T Internet Services.

It has been my pleasure helping you today, Martin. Thank you for choosing AT&T Internet Services. Have a pleasant day!

Sincerely,

Elle

It ran fine earlier. It is now 12:06AM, and the mail is once again slow as heck.
