Indeed.
Not that it matters as I will continue using what works consistently and what the wife and family seem happy with. |

| reply to eX_NihiLo said by eX_NihiLo :Someone who has a subscription to CR please post on how factors are weighted. I'm going to guess end-user factors; GUI, suite integration, tech support are weighted alot more than than pure detection ability. I subscribe to them, but don't have a clue how they grade things. I believe I once read that their criteria is different than what an expert might believe is important. Take a look at computer or photography magazine reviews. They don't match up very often. I use them to get a general idea of what might be good on things I'm not so up on. Then I'll look for other opinions. -- RIP my baby Buttons 1/15/94-2/9/07 |

| reply to VirusXIII Does anyone have a direct link to any of these ratings? I'm a member of that site and I've been unable to find them. Perhaps my search skills are poor.
I did find the ratings from September 2006 for antivirus, antispyware, and antispam software on the Consumer Reports site. Nothing for 2007 though. Thanks. -- Sure, that'll work.. |

My apologies for locking the thread. I'm told that the reviews are in the September issue of the consumer report, on pages 36-39.
I've asked VirusXIII to kindly edit the post and put the images back.
Again my apologies for the deletion. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |

I had to wipe that junk off of 2 machines because it would randomly lock itself so tightly that nothing could be done on the machine. A friend of mine who is not savvy with computers at all was duped into buying this by a Best Buy sales monkey who claimed it was the best thing out there and that Symantec and McAfee were the "worst thing you could ever install on a computer." (He didn't realize that they had specials from time to time where their own Geek Squad would install them. )Took forever to uninstall it. |

I would also like to know this, as we have been using the NeatSuite product for 4 years now at the office and I have never had a crash. But we are not on the latest version and this may keep us off of it if it is a more recent issue. |

| reply to maximusqb said by maximusqb :Lol like consumer reports has any clue about computer security software. Laughed when I saw this post. I think that's just the point. It's a magazine written for a general audience, not for those who work in IT, or are security consultants or wannabees. The average person, unlike the users of this forum, could care less about security. They just want to set it and forget it. And I'll bet the test just shows which products out of the box give the best results for the average consumer without any tinkering.
As an analogy, I'll bet that 95% of the members here use a point-and-shoot camera. Of course it's simply ridiculous for anyone with professional experience to allow the camera to make decisions. But manufacturers often produce products where there's a bigger market, sometimes intentionally dumbing down their products. The best product doesn't always win. | reply to VirusXIII I've Been running Trend Internet security suite for 4 years or so (2005-2007 releases) on 7 systems, 8 if I count the in-laws, and I've never seen a problem caused by trend. On average, TM catches 3 viruses a year, out of 8 active systems. Will admit that a mis-setup in their spam/phishing/website filter did cause access problems... Was easy to identify what the nephew had done, easy to fix it. All TM installs were done by me, all TM installs replaced either the Norton or McAfee suites.
But as someone stated above, to each his own, and realistically, soft factors, like comfort with, ease of use, installation etc often color ones perception of the 'best'.

| reply to VirusXIII I'm afraid I don't trust CR. The first time they rated GM products "very highly" across the board, was when I noticed the back cover was a FULL ad for the Corvette. CR lacks the teeth to bite the hand that feeds. (Granted, the Corvette is a respectable sportscar, but after the numerous recalls of other GM products...credibility is out the window with CR) They also rated the 2001 Passat as a very reliable car, only to have it (amongst other 1.8T motored VWs) a lemon later on.
I suppose they don't test a "normally" laden PC (Windows XP with minimum RAM and space, bloated with MS office, Adobe reader, Intuit apps, games and other "essentially" vendor-provided softwares (AOL trial, ATT trial, OEM support programs, CD software...).
Alwil's Avast! has been doing a fast and free job for me (and others) for years. But to claim NAV better??? It's a virus itself to uninstall (atleast it is with SAVCE), leaving registries, hidden dlls and other resources behind. And it failed to find VUNDO on a machine it was running on, where AVG did find it. Yeah, and why no NOD32? And where is SuperAntiSpyware???
I think they took in the usual "Consumer-purchased-installed-by-OEM" AV apps and threw in a few "3rd party no names..." to make it look fair. IMHO. |

| reply to VirusXIII I received the Sept 2007 CU. The article is on pages 35-39 and is part of a computer and ID theft theme in this issue.
I'd suggest reading the article in full as it also recommends free versions of AV/AT/AS/AP programs. One interesting point they made was that the suites should be run on PCs with 1 GB memory or more, or performance problems may occur(Something we've all suspected I guess! ). As for ratings, they said the lowest rated of the group was still good. They also gave weight to usability, features not directly related to "antixx" like backups.
Again, a read of the whole article is in order.
I'm somewhat surprised at Trend being at the top of all four categories, but then I haven't used it except for Housecall. -- Sive enim ad sapientiam perveniri potest, non paranda nobis solum ea, sed fruenda etiam est |
