On my 4 year old home made puter, it works just fine, no slowdowns at all and is actually quite fast with scans - even found something.

On my store bought cheapo 2 year old E-Machine, it was horrible! Slowed the entire system down, scanned at an unbelievable slow speed...just plain was horrible!

Keeping it on the home made but took it off asap on the E-machine. Placed Comodo and Avast back on the el-cheapo and all appears fine.

Till something tickles my fancy, i'll keep things the way they are for now....

As a side note, Norton brings my computer to a HALT, as did Panda, as did the latest ZA. Had a few "getby's" from Avast so we'll see how TM compares.

I do like Comodo which I have on one of mine, but it really has let me down twice.

BD has a write-up on the BSOD and why their driver causes it. But that was with BD8. I was having the problem only after the forced upgrade to 9.5 from 9.0. BD support admitted it was their fault not mine. They had me do a bunch of stuff and nothing stopped the BSOD's. They finally had me run Belarc Advisor and send them the results. That is how they found out I have those two antispyware programs. They told me then that those two programs were causing their driver to cause a BSOD on boot. That is, of course, absurd. How could two programs that run only on demand cause a driver for another program to cause a BSOD on boot?

I think they had no idea why that driver problem from 8.0 had come back with 9.5 so they latched onto blaming my two anti-spyware programs. They said those two programs are not acceptable from 9.5 on because they don't want people using anything that competes with antispyware they put in 9.5. I went back to 9.0 and no BSOD. But the upgrade to 9.5 is FORCED. You cannot stop it. I also did not want BD after I had that confirmed by support. That is exactly the same mentality as Microsoft with their trying to force updates. I asked BD support if I could just use 9.0, which I loved, and which worked perfectly. They said no that upgrading to 9.5 was mandatory and if I didn't want to do that, and get rid of those two programs, that I should just not use BD. I asked JavaCool why BD tell users they are reqiired to remove his program and he was quite puzzled. I also asked at Spybot and was told it was a long known problem and why was I using such a bad AV if I liked Spybot? At that point, I threw my hands up in the air and got rid of BD.

I do not know about BD10 problems with Teatimer, because I have it disabled, running CounterSpy instead, but I have had never a single problem with Spywareblaster, which I have installed along BD10 since more than a year and even before, with BD9.x!
I have SpyBot installed and I use it eventually for on demand scan,I also have A2 for the same purpose but I only have as residents BD and CS running along fine without having problems w/each other.

I have not had a single BSOD for more than two years, maybe it is some "luck" or maybe it is that I keep my machine clean ;)

Starting with 9.5, I had throw my Pro version is wastebasket because of BSOD's on boot caused by the BD driver. BD told me the driver doesn't like Spybot (which runs only on demand...no Teatimer) and SpywareBlaster. They demanded I remove those or stop using BD. I stopped using BD and I will never recommend it since it requires one to not use two fine antispyware programs.

Some have asked where NOD32 is...where is Avira? Where is F-Prot? Where is Dr.Web? etc.

I'd suggest reading the article in full as it also recommends free versions of AV/AT/AS/AP programs. One interesting point they made was that the suites should be run on PCs with 1 GB memory or more, or performance problems may occur(Something we've all suspected I guess! :D ). As for ratings, they said the lowest rated of the group was still good. They also gave weight to usability, features not directly related to "antixx" like backups.

Again, a read of the whole article is in order.

I'm somewhat surprised at Trend being at the top of all four categories, but then I haven't used it except for Housecall.

They also rated the 2001 Passat as a very reliable car, only to have it (amongst other 1.8T motored VWs) a lemon later on.

I suppose they don't test a "normally" laden PC (Windows XP with minimum RAM and space, bloated with MS office, Adobe reader, Intuit apps, games and other "essentially" vendor-provided softwares (AOL trial, ATT trial, OEM support programs, CD software...).

Alwil's Avast! has been doing a fast and free job for me (and others) for years. But to claim NAV better??? It's a virus itself to uninstall (atleast it is with SAVCE), leaving registries, hidden dlls and other resources behind.
And it failed to find VUNDO on a machine it was running on, where AVG did find it. Yeah, and why no NOD32?
And where is SuperAntiSpyware???

On average, TM catches 3 viruses a year, out of 8 active systems. Will admit that a mis-setup in their spam/phishing/website filter did cause access problems... Was easy to identify what the nephew had done, easy to fix it.
All TM installs were done by me, all TM installs replaced either the Norton or McAfee suites.

But as someone stated above, to each his own, and realistically, soft factors, like comfort with, ease of use, installation etc often color ones perception of the 'best'.

I think that's just the point. It's a magazine written for a general audience, not for those who work in IT, or are security consultants or wannabees. The average person, unlike the users of this forum, could care less about security. They just want to set it and forget it. And I'll bet the test just shows which products out of the box give the best results for the average consumer without any tinkering.

As an analogy, I'll bet that 95% of the members here use a point-and-shoot camera. Of course it's simply ridiculous for anyone with professional experience to allow the camera to make decisions. But manufacturers often produce products where there's a bigger market, sometimes intentionally dumbing down their products. The best product doesn't always win. Someone who has a subscription to CR please post on how factors are weighted. I'm going to guess end-user factors; GUI, suite integration, tech support are weighted alot more than than pure detection ability.
I subscribe to them, but don't have a clue how they grade things. I believe I once read that their criteria is different than what an expert might believe is important. Take a look at computer or photography magazine reviews. They don't match up very often. I use them to get a general idea of what might be good on things I'm not so up on. Then I'll look for other opinions.

I don't run suites anymore on any of my family's or relatives machines, but when I did run and recommend suites, ran Trend, I had very positive things to say about them. It's been 2 years since I used them personally however.

I've seen horror stories with Norton and McAfee, so I haven't recommended them in many, many years.

As another user pointed out, where is NOD32 on the list?

While I'm sure that ConsumerReports.org does not in any way alter or skew their data, I can't help but think whether or not their readers actually get to use any but the one brand of (fill in the blank) software they comment on.

That is just awful that they could claim TrendMicro was the best. And put McAfee ahead of Norton? Symantec is much better these days but McAfee is still awful. I think they are probably right though about Counterspy.
