"gee, trendmicro flagged file on my pc that no one else flagged.. it's the best!"...
Yeah, the best at breaking things.

Consumer reports should poll BroadbandReports THEN release the "Best Of: Computer Security Software" report.

Oddly enough, I recall a year ago Consumer Report's Internet/PC (or something to that effect) section had only one site listed for further information: www.broadbandreports.com

I think that's just the point. It's a magazine written for a general audience, not for those who work in IT, or are security consultants or wannabees. The average person, unlike the users of this forum, could care less about security. They just want to set it and forget it. And I'll bet the test just shows which products out of the box give the best results for the average consumer without any tinkering.

As an analogy, I'll bet that 95% of the members here use a point-and-shoot camera. Of course it's simply ridiculous for anyone with professional experience to allow the camera to make decisions. But manufacturers often produce products where there's a bigger market, sometimes intentionally dumbing down their products. The best product doesn't always win. Wanna buy a few top-of-the-line Betamaxes?
