In my opinion one can write off the Canon Prosumer camcorders such as the XL and its lower end cousin GL series.

Those are what I was referring to and that is where Canon beats Fujinon hands down even though Fuji has many parallel models that are equally or lower priced.

The Fujinon are better at the wide and midrange. They don't do so well beyond 90% of zoom range. But within that range, they are amazing.

As I stated, in the ENG arena the Fuji’s kick butt and are very competitively priced, I have used them for a number of years on my Panasonic camcorders and they not only work well they will take a licking and keep on ticking.

The primary driver for HD was while most of the local broadcasters transmit in HD the majority of their field work (excepting sports) is shot in SD and we wanted to get an edge on them early in the game, my personal predictions and that of my partner are the 2010 and 2012 election cycles will be a generous and newsworthy few years and should produce enough business to justify the costs of the upgrades. We also have a plan if we can get the financing to acquire either a majority or total ownership in a floundering local UHF TV station/license.

Anyhow the first of the HD units arrived from B&H at the beginning of this week and after a day on the bench being equipped followed by a few days of testing it is now ready to go into the field and get to work earning its keep or so I hope.

For what it is worth the unit is a JVC GY-HD200 SD/HDV Mini-DV based camcorder equipped with a Fujinon Th16x5.5BRMU zoom lens, an Azden shotgun microphone, an Azden single channel diversity antenna wireless receiver, an Anton-Bauer 50 watt Ultralight II and powered by an Anton-Bauer Gold Mount with a combination of Trimpacs (45 watt hour) and Digital HYTRON (140 watt hour) packs.

I think it it's wonderful, because it opened the door to overcranking and to being able to download an hour of footage in about 8 minutes and be ready to edit immediately, even from the card directly.

We actually did use an Anton Bauer battery pack system when we did the 8-hour time lapse at the DreamRide 2009 event in Farmington last month. We put one my EX1s in a 38' scissors lift and shot 1 fps all day. Ended up with 22 minutes of video. My partner edited down to about a minute. It's up on YouTube under DreamRide 2009: Field of Bikes.

The best way to see my work is on a large projection system. It's impossible to appreciate CineAlta footage on a 50" plasma. You really have to see it on a wall-sized screen. We recently installed a 154" screen and an InFocus IN82 30-bit projector and that thing can do black like no LCD or plasma I have ever seen, and color is accurate. I authored some stuff on Blu-ray, including the New Milford Memorial Day parade, and the footage from Westover ARB last fall, the day Kent Shockley wrecked his jet powered truck, that is just incredible. It makes the blu-ray movies we rent look rather soft and grainy by comparison. The camera will do 12 f-stops of lattitude (a fact verified by a respected British cinematographer, Allistair Chapman) and is full-raster HD. Using the HD-SDI output, there is 30-bit, uncompressed HD video there, which, if you have access to a Wafian recorder system ($17K), you can record the full quality uncompressed signal for green screen compositing where quality is absolutely critical.

These cameras are being employed to shoot portions of major budget films. Public Enemies and District 9 were both shot in parts with the smaller PMW-EX1.

Now that I have a 154" Cinemascope screen and 1080P projector to view EX footage on, I feel confident in standardizing on this camera for any cinematic project. The images are just astounding!

I'm all set for concert season! :)

On thursday I called the camera store in town I buy from.... none in stock. Then I called Henry's... None in stock and a 100 on backorder (yikes!). I called one more store and they had ONE left. It was a kit, however they sold me the body alone.

What a difference. I feel like I need to re-adjust to using my lenses (although I did come from 35mm film before jumping to a DSLR). My 10D won't be left behind though, I still enjoy using that camera.

That second shot is one of the first images I took, along with my 14MM lens. It's a bit out of focus, but at that time I was more focused on seeing the results, rather than setting up an image heh.

I'm not sure that you can do this in Gimp (you can do it in Paint Shop Pro) but try creating a new adjustment layer for Curves and another for Levels. I find that it takes basically no time to process at all compared to actually applying Curves and Levels directly to the image.

Thanks! right now it's one of discovery as I read the manual, camera in hand, seeing all the control I didn't have before.

One thing I'm finding out is that my desktop PC is struggling to edit images the size I'm taking. It took lots longer to open and scale this than before, and after testing edits with levels, curves etc, it's really quite a load on this old Dell.

I also note that this is the first time I've taken a photo where viewing full showed up the heat wave distortion(on the house on the right center). I'll post more in the discussion forum as I progressl.

A decent range sleeper lens for just an AF walk around.

Don't need any lenses as I got an adapter that allows all my M42 Pentax glass to work on the camera, so I will have an instant lens line up. :)

Since this camera has a user hot swappable IR Cut Filter in it I will be able to shoot FoveonX3 goodness standard, IR+VIS, and full time IR whenever I choose. :) Can't beat that! All for what ended up around the same price it would have cost me to convert the 20D over to full time IR. I weighed the benefits, and the scale plummeted in favor of the Sigma, hehe. Plus, something to be said about that FoveonX3 goodness!! I can imagine the extended dynamic range of the sensor will also yield some extra fine IR images and B&W, obviously it does in color. Box shots coming when they arrive. :)

On the video side;

I picked up a used Canon MA-300 microphone adapter for the GL-2, the MA-300 allows one to connect professional microphones that have balanced outputs via. the MA-300’s XLR connectors. When connected to the GL-2 the MA-300 disables the cameras internal stereo microphone and routes the XLR connectors into the camcorder.

To work with the MA-300, I purchased an Azden SGM-1X shotgun microphone, this will remain camera mounted and feeds the left channel, in addition to the SGM-1X I mounted (Velcro) a Samson Micro 32 wireless receiver to the rear of the MA-300 and connected it to the right channel, the Micro 32 allows the use of (one at a time) a handheld Samson H-32 microphone or a beltpack transmitter which can be used with an Azden lavalier microphone or my trusty Electro-Voice 635A handheld ENG microphone.

The quality of audio these devices provide is simply amazing.

On the still side I picked up another Canon EOS-1D MKII as a second carry camera eliminating the need to swap in the field the 35-350 mm lens with my 20mm.

The camera was listed as being in an 8 out of 10 condition, however if the seller had bothered to clean the body it could have been listed as a 9 and with only 6300 shutter actuations this beast is still in it’s infancy.

I didn’t want to spend the money for another 430 so I picked up a Sunpak PX42 to go with the 1D and it seems to work quite well. ;-)

Seems par for the course in reality. You've got to explain significantly more to a P&S user than a (D)SLR user. The P&S user needs all kinds of hand holding and explanation of every function where as the manual for the 350D is simply saying "Go here, here and here for X, Y and Q functions."

That being said, The small size is a plus. Even the P&S I've been using before I upgrade to the big boys club (stay tuned for a box shot later today :)! ) isn't small. The Powershot Pro1 is 1.3oz versus 1.1 for the 1000D body. The lens adds on an unknown amount of weight but I think they're going to weigh the same when all is said and done.

The building shots are from my office window, and there were bad reflections, but I thought it gave a pretty good idea of the zoom reach.

The other shots are just to show the zoom range. The last one is into the digital zoom range, which isn't great of course, but might come in handy sometime. :)

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 feels like a sturdy little camera and the settings and menu are very easy to navigate.
I think I'm going to be very happy with this camera until I get my hands straightened around to where it's not so painful to hold my Canon Digital Rebel XTi.

I took this box shot with my Canon Digital Rebel XTi and was going to post some pictures with my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 but my old card reader doesn't read the SDHC card I got for it.
Once I get some time to see if my Toshiba Satellite laptop will read the card I'll post some pictures.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help and suggestions they gave.

Just snag a flash that can fire as a slave and you are good to go anyways. :) I use a ping pong ball that I cut a rectangle piece out of with an Exacto knife to fit right over the on board flash. Works perfectly to diffuse the on board flash and to trigger the slave flash.

Also, the OIS(image stabilization) on the Panasonics is one of the best on the market! Works flawlessly!

Also the lens really is a fine tuned piece of glass!! Made and/or designed by Leica(depending on the model for being made or just designed by Leica). The lens allows the Panasonics to capture those super fine details many other cameras can't. Their macro mode is also hands down tops right now as well. Combine a Raynox add-on macro lens and/or Nikon multi-element diopters and you can venture into the micro world!! I will post an example when get on my PC.

The build quality is lightweight yet very surprisingly strong and durable.
Not to mention you also get an lcd + evf. And full manual focusing too! Which is quite similar to the old Sony F717s in the way it crops in super close magnification so you can make sure to get perfect focus! I wasn't keen on having to use the little joystick at first to use mf, but after a bit I found it to be an awesome way to do it. That joystick rocks for aperture and everything else as well.

The largest complaint is noise. But as long as you change the default setting in the setup to natural from default the noise is no worse then any other small sensor camera. :) also Neat Image will eliminate most of the noise and still leave most all of the details, so noise is not really an issue anymore so then any other small sensor camera.

Unlike most, I have no brand loyalties and recommend what is best and/or best for the buck regardless of name. I go to great lengths to test camera when they come out as I do a lot of consulting on cameras so I need to know them somewhat.

If you want RAW you could always return the Canon and snag a Panasonic FZ8, FZ18, LX3, or FZ28. All offer everything a dSLR does except for interchangeable lenses.

Or wait and keep an eye on the Canon digital camera hacking groups and sooner or later they will prolly release a hacked firmware to enable RAW like they did for the older Canon digital cameras.

Also make sure to read up about Error-18 on the Canons so you can take preventive measures so it doesn't happen to your camera, at least not anytime soon.

As for the Zeiss, not much out there from any manufacturer that is going to even come remotely close to what the Zeiss lenses can do! Once you use them it is hard to ever look at L, EX, VR, Di, ATX, etc. glass the same again! Many of the German and Russian lenses will do that though! I know my 35mm f/3.5 Zeiss and my Russian lenses produce far more detailed, sharper, contrastier, and truer colors, not to mention better Bokeh, then any other lenses I have ever used! Tomioka made lenses come close and even match the Zeiss lenses in some instances though!

Anyways I got the 10D here for more or less just for night time photography and whatever else I can think of. tomorrow looks to be sucky as far as weather goes (rain) I do plan on using it for the small studio I'm doing. next lens I'm not sure.. everyone says get the 50mm as a portrait lens as it almost becomes a 80mm and some say get the 85mm lens.

It feels solid but IMHO Nikon has better button placement that feels natural...

Got it next to my photo editing computer (the big CRT trinitron to the right). Absolutely loving this since I have total control over the entire process (ie, color managed) instead of sending .tiffs hoping it'll come out right. The borderless B&W prints on matte looks absolutely stunning.

Now, I just need more frames, onto Michael's!

I swore I would not get another Sony, i was shopping for a Kodak, but after seeing some numbers that (seem) to be good, and it took an awesome close-up shop AND he was putting the sale sticker on it, i was sold. Good guy :) the sale starts tomorrow, but he went to bat for me to his manager and they gave me the sale price early. Gotta charge the battery before I play with it (and surf for a good memory stick). this shot is straight out the box, havent change any settings other than the clock.

The place that screwed me over was called Digital Corp. Among other things, they tried to pull a bait and switch on me. I've been doing some extensive testing with this camera and just as presumed Canon indeed did bump up the algorithms from the XT many more notches than one! In the user defined prefs with the camera set on standard (default) the images all were extremely crappy, VERY over-saturated, too much contrasts, noisy and easily over-exposed. So far I've found that by bumping the levels down about three notches it's quite an amazing little camera, of course more testing will have to be completed but as it looks now I think I can work with it. :p

Lens was a separate deal, killer lens for the money if you know which one to look for. Canon makes three different versions of this lens and two of them are jokes. This is my second copy of this lens.

You can typically use a 2x TC on them and lose little to nothing major in image quality.. some sharpening and local contrast enhancement does the trick. As long as the lens is good and you have a decent TC. I have stacked double 2x TCs with so/so results already. I also have a 3x TC that doesn't do bad on some lenses.. nice slapping it on the Novoflex 400mm f/5.6 IS L and getting a usable 1200mm!! :)

As far as filters, I got this set of Tiffens for both of my lenses. If you select Adorama as the vendor, there is a major price difference of almost $20 compared to anywhere else.

I've gotten a fair amount of use from a tripod already, so that may be something to consider. You don't have to spend major bucks on one, but I wouldn't trust a Wal-Mart special with this setup. I already had the Suncom deluxe model you can get from Best Buy or Circuit City for like $80, and is sturdy enough for general use. There may be some cheaper models that are sturdy enough, but I especially recommend this one if you're a taller guy like me (6'4).

The last item that you might find useful (which I've yet to pick up) is a remote. The Pentax wired ones are quite pricey (more than the wireless; go figure). I think Gemologist had a link to an E-bay shop for third party ones that were like 1/4 the price.

1.) Bounce Flash.
2.) Coverage with ultrawide lenses - bounced (diffuser alone helps but still casts a shadow at ultra-wide ie. 12mm)
3.) To replace a bigger flash.

It's great for indoors where happy snaps happen, but if I could only have 1 flash, it would be the SB-800. The SB-800 comes with many accessories (diffuser, integrated bounce card), and has robust remote abilities; any P&S can trigger the SB-800 like a strobe (SU-4 mode) as demonstrated below. In contrast, the SB-400 has no remote capabilities so I purchased the SB-400 for traveling purposes only. The built-in flash does 90% of what I need for fill (for vacation type photos), so if this flash was any larger and didn't have an adjustable lens, I wouldn't have considered it.

Slightly off-topic, the SB-600 has remote capabilities but needs a commander flash. This isn't a problem for D70, D80, D200 bodies since the built-in flash has a commander mode. However, the SB-600 doesn't have the SU-4 mode that enables other light sources to trigger it.

After having played a few minutes with this, it really is a fantastic piece of hardware. It's pretty easily a walk-around lens for me, although a bit bulky I must admit.
