[Speed Problem] What is my true downstream/upstream cap?

I called ELink about a week ago to have my speed bumped up to the 6.0 package. The tech told me that my line qualified for the upgrade.

Yesterday I ran a few speed tests and noticed that my upstream had been bumped up to 768kps, but for downstream I'm hitting just under 3000kbps.

I talked to a tech online and they told me my line was set for 6.0. I had my doubts, so I managed to telnet into the modem (a Zyxel prestige 645 ADSL) and found the upstream at 768k, but the downstream at 2900k.

I feel like my connection wasn't upgraded, but honestly I have no idea. Any thoughts?

There is not a Sync Rate of 2900 kbps and that tells me your line does not support higher sync rates at this time. Valid sync Rates are 1536 kbps (1.5 Mbps), 3008 kbps (3.0 Mbps), and 6016 kbps (6.0 Mbps) for the Downstream path. Your line was indeed upgraded, but its current conditions (distance from CO too far or inside wiring bad being the top 2 faults) prevent all the bandwidth from reaching the DSL Modem.

You would need to post your DSL Stats as seen in the topic link below. I bet your Relative Downstream Capacity is either at 100% or very near to 100% meaning that you are either too far for 6.0 and/or have inside wiring problems preventing higher Sync Rates on the Downstream.

Post the data from running the commands "w a l n" and "w a l f" and "w a c" and "w a p".

Once you've gotten your technical issues resolved, would you share how you got EL to raise you to 6.0? There are multiple people reading and posting here who have tried and failed to get EL to upgrade them from 3.0 to 6.0. Thanks.

Sure, that'll work..

Thanks for the reply.

You're right. Now I'm syncing at something odd, 3744k, getting between 3000-3200 in speed tests. Capacity ranges from 97%-100%. The culprit looks like my downstream attenuation is at 50db, which I find surprising since I live less than 2 miles away from the CO - then again, I live in the city so maybe with the population being a bit more dense this results in more wiring. I'm pretty sure the wiring in this building is old as well.

Would directly connecting to the NIC give me a better idea? This would bypass the internal wiring, correct?

I called Earthlink and went directly to the sales dept. I asked if I could upgrade my connection to 6.0. They said my line was good for the upgrade and that was it. I figure it took them one business day (or maybe less) to switch me over. Overall, it was an easy and painless process.

Yes, test out at the NID to bypass all inside wiring.

Maybe it is the wiring inside... here's what I found:

inside:

Upstream Speed: 768 kbps
Downstream Speed: 3584 kbps

ChangeMe> w a l n
relative capacity occupation: 97%
noise margin downstream: 5.5 db
output power upstream: 12.0 dbm
attenuation downstream: 51.0 db

ChangeMe> w a l f
relative capacity occupation: 104%
noise margin upstream: 7.0 db
output power downstream: 20.0 dbm
attenuation upstream: 31.5 db
------------------------------------

at NID:

Upstream Speed: 512 kbps
Downstream Speed: 2496 kbps

ChangeMe> w a l n
relative capacity occupation: 47%
noise margin downstream: 16.5 db
output power upstream: 10.5 dbm
attenuation downstream: 48.0 db

ChangeMe> w a l f
relative capacity occupation: 62%
noise margin upstream: 16.0 db
output power downstream: 16.5 dbm
attenuation upstream: 29.0 db

Why were the speeds lower at the NID?

Did your higher/faster speed return when the modem was placed back inside?

I've not seen that behavior before and now there are suddenly two (2) of you with this same strange result.
