jimutsu join:2007-08-03 Noblesville, IN | Unbelievable cell towers This story makes absolute sense. I work for a cell phone company (whom i won't disclose). Believe it or not a single cell phone tower can only handle 53 calls at a time. I know many of you are in disbelief, but it's honestly true. Before having this job i only had a cell phone, and did away with the good ol landline. I put a landline in the house a week later...lol I feel very sorry for the people of minneapolis. Also, 1 of the news people made a joke about the collapse about not having ane "concrete" details to the collapse and started laughing. Guarantee he wouldn't b laughing if his loved one's were swept away. |

 | LoL, and people were bashing femtocells / UMA could only carry that much if installed at a hotspot...
I knew it!!! The "best" VoIP codec that sounds good is 8 - 9.6 kilobytes per sec IIRC.
28.8k calling FTW on cells!!! (or actually about 28.3 w/ true division) |

| reply to jimutsu It depends heavily on what gear is there.
They can dump the data channels and add more voice channels in a bind. I know of some towers that have tested at well over 150 concurrent connections.
Depending on the codec used some mobiles can go to 14.48 k a sec. 10 calls can saturate a t1. Now when they use crappy codecs they can squeeze more folks onto a tower.
I have seen it as low as 3.8 k a sec on some moto handsets.
Capacity for cell towers has to do with A) the antenna's and how they connect into the switches. Some people started using cheap antennas that cover a big arch and that cuts down on the amount of people able to use a tower. B) Depends on the muxing. Newer muxing technology can actually send the data much faster and allow more to be sent out. C) depends on the back haul. What connection is to the tower. I know places in the country that have fractional t's out to them because they are sort of remote. Don't try and make a call during hiking season or even during ski season.

 | reply to jimutsu LIE! a t1 can handle 190 calls continously on a standard codec... Depends on how much spectrum and how much backhaul is given to that tower... |

 | I always find it funny, on these tech sites (slashdot, BBR, digg):
To get the expert numbers on things, you need to bash whats being bashed until you get people writing in. |
