Mysterious Caps?

Before I start, please excuse my ignorance.

I have been a customer of... oh wow let me remember... back in the @Home days all the way until Comcast of Summer, 2006. Got fed up with their attitude and when AT&T offered me 3mbit for $17.99 and a 2wire wireless portal for free, I jumped ship.

Unfortunately my contract is about to expire and I do not hesitate to come back for 2 reasons:

1) Powerboost
2) Higher Speeds.

Unfortunately, with my 3 mbit AT&T plan, I average about 400 Gb's of transfer, PER MONTH with my all time record of 551 Gb in February alone. That is not including LAN traffic. Add that and you're close to 600 gb.

Although off topic, some of you might ask why. Reason? »www.aa419.org . I run one of their applets that "suck" bandwidth from those fake/scammer/phishing websites. Essentially a bunch of people and I leave our computer's on 24/7 and use all unused bandwidth to suck the life out of the scammers' websites. Makes me feel good. Same reason why I run BOINC.

Now back on topic, AT&T doesn't give a crap about how much i transfer, as long as i pay my bill. Last before I left comcast, this forum was in a whole flurry of cap letters.

Simple question: Does comcast still do that, ie, has the letters stopped coming in?

IMO, you're better off just staying with AT&T. You'll have problems with Comcast with those kinds of numbers.

And really, you should also be considering your neighbors and those you'd be affecting on this kind of a shared resource network. It isn't about Comcast being a bad guy..it's the technology that's involved and it's limitations as it stands today.

While your mission is admirable, Comcast will undoubtedly send you out a warning letter at those levels, and wind up cutting you off.

I think that once Docsis 3.0 rolls out in a couple years, things will be different because the limitations are far different. But, until then..it's how it goes.

Can you get 6Mb DSL? For all you use the service for, it seems it would still be very cost effective.

I believe I recall this subject coming up occasionally, yes.

I currently have ATT DSL and Comcast cable (just switched from RoadRunner). It's a long story as to why I have both, but I am about to drop the Comcast and what you mentioned is one of the reasons; I also like to use a lot of bandwidth.
I'm on the ATT/Yahoo Elite plan- $35/month gives me 6Mbps down and 768Kbps up. It actually runs closer to 5Mbps/650Kbps most of the time. Pretty good speed for the price.
Comcast charges more for a similar speed package in my area and apparently does not have any significantly faster options. I believe the fastest Comcast package here is 8Mbps/768Kbps for $59.99.
I'm not sure Powerboost should be an issue for you if you're running a lot of bandwidth all the time. From what I've read, Powerboost only works for the first few seconds of a download/upload. I don't know if that would work for your app or not.

Comcast has been known to send "The Letter" (abusive bandwidth consumption); reportedly for as low as 200GB. You are in the range where they might call you to account for your usage.

If you are within 6,500 feet of an RT, or 5,000 feet of a CO (where your DSLAM is located) you should be good for the at&t Yahoo! HSI "Elite" tier; 6016kpbs/768kbps service for $34.99 per month.
