william, your IP address gives no personally indentifiable information about you (name, street, etc.). It's just an indication of where your ISP server is located.
Of course, it can be used to "identify" you if you have been banned from any sites (still no personal info). I suppose you could use a proxy if you feel you absolutely must do this, but unless you are really trying to hide your identity to circumvent something else, there's really no need. -- ~~"As long as America is an infidel enemy, terrorizing it is a duty." Just kiddin, this must be the ISPs CO or something. I'm not sure what it is called for Cable ISPs. |

Not even close:
The first image is where that site claims my IP address is at. It is an apartment complex near Highland Park, off Travis St. near Lemmon Ave. East and Blackburn St. Nowhere near my Central Office, which is the building marked with a black dot in the second image. Too far for me to be able to get 6000/768 (which means I'm within 5000 feet or so of that building).
It is likely that was where the previous owner of my IP address lives. Incidentally, if I'm basing this site's determination of where my address is, it may change as my modem rebooted itself while posting.
Edit: it changed all right. Now I appear to be someone living in Bedford, TX. Quite a feat for my 6M/768K DSL to reach that far... -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

Dorothy, Toto, Help Me! Evidently I've caught the magical twister ride to Dorothy's homeland. Suddenly I find myself 1400 miles away, just outside of Topeka Kansas.
It DID correctly identify my country though. Hmmmm. Time to upgrade the tinfoil on my house.

Re: hide ip address With this IP Address I am in Dolton, IL! Only 295 miles off!
I have sprint broadband, so sometimes I am in IL, CA, FL, AZ, etc. It's all based on where the IP was registered. |

I think I see some guy trying to steal copper wire over there... :D |
Oh, MY! They even mispelled CEMETERY!
Well, my geolocation was about 20 miles off, in a corn field next to a power substation. Now if they drop a nuke over there I might get some fallout. And my internet would go down. However, evil hackers using IP geolocation would be wasting their time trying to find me using that method.
Edited to update findings

| Notice that the word address is spelled wrong in the URL. | Re:Misspelling - The domain with correct spelling appears to be parked by somebody looking to make big bucks on selling it, so the site owner probably registered the available misspelled one.

But what about cell phone locators? Hey, your IP address geolocation may be anywhere from a block to hundreds of miles off, but cell phones report real time to GPS - like this one -
