| [Connectivity] connection dropping
hello all. i've had comcast cable internet for 6 years now and have had this particular issue before. i find that it usually occurs during summers when the temperatures are really high. i've always thought it might be a problem with the actual lines outside, but that's just a guess. i came across this site and began reading about other people's problems with comcast in my area and although i found that there were a lot of other complaints about downtime i decided to a smokeping test (among others) anyways. i was hoping some of the more savvy users could help me isolate potential problems and maybe help me correct them. here's more info:
1) Your location: levittown, pa (30 minutes north of philly)
2) A description of the problem. all i'm really using my computer for recently is gaming. when the connection drops, the game, webpage or whatever will hang a bit. i usually take a glance over at the modem and sure enough sooner or later all the lights except power go out. the second light (receive) then blinks for a while, and then the lights slowly come back on one by one down the line. it never stays down for more than a few minutes, however this happens from 2pm-6pm once every half hour or so. i'm not 100% sure on how to read the smokeping graph, but i believe it confirms this.
3) Is the issue intermittent, constant or does it occur at a specific time of day? i find that it generally occurs in the afternoon. from around 2pm-6pm.
4) Your modem make, model & firmware version. motorola sb4100 (outdated i'm sure) Software Version: SB4100-1.4.9.0-SCM00-NOSH Hardware Version: 0 MIB Version: II GUI Version: 1.0 VxWorks Version: 5.3
5) Describe any home networking if applicable. (i.e. routers, hubs, adapters, etc.) my modem is connected directly via an ethernet cable to a wireless router (linksys wrt54g), which in turns connects to my computer also via ethernet. the modem is connected to a cable which is split only once as far as i can see.
6) List any firewall and/or anti-virus software you have installed. Include what version you have. i do not use a firewall and my antivirus is the most recent avast!.
my smokeping test results: »/r3/smokeping.···279f07e1
just incase, here are a bunch of other diagnostics i've run. here is a speedtest using parsippany, nj:

another speed test, using the nyc server:

a tweak test: »/tweakr/block:···a=normal
also, i attempted to check my signal levels and everything looked okay. seeing as how this is an intermittent problem i wasn't sure if the speed test, tweak test, or signal level check would really be of much help unless i was actually experiencing a dropped connection, which i wasn't during all of those. |
