|  Concept of powerboost annoys me
I have to say comcast really pisses me off with this powerboost crap. I just dont see the BIG advantage. Yes you get a nice start off but what good is it if it only lasts 20-40 seconds? I really feel like comcast is just doing this for a cheap solution to keep people happy when what they really should be doing is working on making our connections faster. Its the perfect advertising method, I always see posters of their 16mb speed and in tiny * you see "Speeds reflect average download during powerboost with upgraded plan" Are you guys/gals really happy with powerboost? I guess it helps browsing the web and yea maybe our big downloads finish a min or two earlier, but come on if they increased or download from 6 to 10 that would benefit us a lot more then a quick boost.
Edit: I should have worded the subject differently its more the context that comcast uses it for marketing annoys me. Dont get me wrong I do understand what their trying to accomplish, but they advertise it as something totally different. |

Exactly.. Ive been through 3 cable providers in the same household. It started as media one I beleive and was called road runner then went to AT&T and quickly switched to comcast. I think even back in the days of roadrunner I remember seeing a lot of people were getting 10mbit connections with their cable provider out in the west coast. (I dont recall which one right now maybe someone can refresh my memory) The point being that was around 5 years ago now. |

I have the 8mb package... it rocks. As typical "Internet" use does not include large movie sized files/continuous P2P it is understandable why Comcast would use Powerboost as it is designed. It has a definite advantage for 95% of their users. Only power users ever really complain about it... 
Pay the 10$ for 8Mb/768 if you want more continuous bandwidth.

I don't like Powerboost either. I think Comcast use this as a way to justify cutting the advertised download speed.
For example I'm on the 6Mbps/384Kbps plan and I think that Comcast has changed my download to 3Mbps instead of setting it at 6Mpbs. But, the only time you can tell the real speed is when the Powerboost isn't working.
I like real download speeds/upload speeds. I am not a fan of this fake Powerboost thing because it's only temporary. |

At least you guys are getting PowerBoost. My 6Mbps is rock solid, granted, but it would be nice if I were getting the PowerBoost download feature as advertised. I've seen in on a friend's connection in a nearby Atlanta suburb, and it's very handy when it works.
Long-term -- yeah -- they need to just improve their system.

Well.. the "concept" or Powerboost is to allow you to download smaller files faster.
That Concept sits pretty good with me. Patches, work related crap, videos, music, misc software, this makes up a huge amount of online activity.
Increasing the DL from 6-10 would benifit "us" more then powerboost.. but not the general average consumer.. who make up the majority of the millions ( have no idea what they are at these days) of customers.
And CoolLikeThat- just because your connection doesnt seem to go above 3Mbps, doesnt mean Comcast is "cutting" your speed purposely.

*FOR ME*, and the ~100MB files that I "occasionally" download, getting the first 40MB at unreal speeds(29-32mbps) does make a difference.
Cuts the download times to less than half!
Of course, YMMV.

I think Powerboost is pretty cool... if your system can handle it. Adelphia left such a patchwork mess for Comcast that when they turned on Powerboost, it screwed a lot of us up in eastern Colorado Springs. We have a Colorado Springs thread going on the subject, so I won't bore you with the details here, but our service really goes downhill in the late afternoons until after midnight or so. The longtime cable HSI users here said they didn't have a problem until Comcast took over and turned on Powerboost. I'd get faster, more reliable, service from 1.5Mbps DSL, which is probably what I'm going to switch to.

IronChefMorimoto What modem do you have? If it is DOCSIS 1.0 you will never get Powerboost.

At least you get fast speeds off the bat. Cox just started using this in my area last month. Friday I got an e-mail from them telling me that I can expect to see my 7mb service boosted to 9mb for the beggining of large downloads. And all of that for no extra cost. |

My main beef with powerboost was the havok it wreaks on some QoS implementations, although that's more for upstream powerboost. It makes it very difficult to set up some QoS rules, when you don't have a constant upstream speed.

In light of the fact that the price of my HSI has not risen since it was 1.5mb/256kb I'll have to say that I'm very happy with my curent service and PowerBoost.

I and all I know that have comcast have never had actual advertised speeds.In fact thats why they say up too 8. There is no real advertised speeds. If there was they would offer prices based on minimum speeds. |

Everyone I know gets their full bandwidth whether its the 6M or 8M package.
Cable is not DSL and is not affected by distance. If you are not getting your full speed, post the particulars in the Comcast HSI forum for assistance, chances are there is a problem.
Its "Up to 8" in the advertisements, because you have to pay for that additionally to get it.
