fiberguy : Ok.. for pulling it out of the grave, it was pretty high up on the list of topics... so, I read, I responded, and never got the old topic warning.. so yet something else that obviously got your goat.. wow, you're easy.

Let me explain this to you the right way.

Comcast and many other providers have in fact been providing acceptable speed upgrades just about every year to 18 months using the current DOCSIS technologies out there. However, at 2.0, some people made the early jump and others didn't knowing that 3.0 is around the corner.

If YOU ran a business in our current economy, would you have updated the system to 2.0 knowing you are going to upgrade to 3.0 again in a very short period of time? .. would you spend all the money that you know you'd not get back... for a technology that isn't worth it when you know that the majority of your customers could care less? Or would you take your company down a dangerous path, spend a butt load of money and piss off the people that REALLY matter - those who are paying your check?

Ok - now that I have your attention there, let me pull you out of another grave. Did you ever stop to think that you have to stop thinking that your patterns ARE the patterns of EVERYONE out there? and did you know you can't believe that what you read on techie forums represent the masses? (because they don't) Tech boards attract just that.. tech types. The average user doesn't care like you or the ones around YOU personally.

Now, let's look at where powerbost WILL be noticed:

- MP3 Downloads - VERY common with users and they take a few seconds to download with PB active.

-YouTube videos or streaming media - those files now get a boost of download (providing the other side can keep up with it) so the initial buffering is more and the user doesn't have to stop 10 seconds into their stream to wait for the buffer to collect more.

-Typical downloads - Real media, iTunes software, Rhapsody client, hardware drivers, etc. - Those files practically download completely under PB in most cases.

-Windows Update - most of them fly now. I've even been able to have powerboost stay on dang near the entire time SP2 comes down the line.

So, I know you will ignore everything I just said because it answers your question and takes your thunder away, but while you say this won't benefit people surfing the net, it's not just about that so get that out of your head. They targeted the EXACT user they intended on targeting.. and if you'd look up some numbers on your own time, you'd see WHY PB is a good thing to most users/customers.
--
"Complaining is the least path of resistance for the self-serving, the lazy, and I’m told it’s a woman’s prerogative..."

Seeing how it only lasts about 40 seconds how does that cause a significant benefit to its users? It benefits comcast more marketing wise then anything. Just think of all the users who run a speed test and think that they dont need fios or a competitor because their speed is already the same or faster. What most people dont understand is yea its fast, however this speed will only last about 40 seconds. Im not going to get rid of powerboost that would make no sense as it does give a nice head start on content, but I would personally benefit more if they just upgraded the speed a little bit. But its all a balancing act because it is still a shared resource.
And I still think allowing someone to grab a file.. even part of it at speeds that no one is offering for the same price that they are paying now is pretty neat.
USAFA82 : I think Powerboost is pretty cool... if your system can handle it. Adelphia left such a patchwork mess for Comcast that when they turned on Powerboost, it screwed a lot of us up in eastern Colorado Springs. We have a Colorado Springs thread going on the subject, so I won't bore you with the details here, but our service really goes downhill in the late afternoons until after midnight or so. The longtime cable HSI users here said they didn't have a problem until Comcast took over and turned on Powerboost. I'd get faster, more reliable, service from 1.5Mbps DSL, which is probably what I'm going to switch to.
--
My Test History: »/testhistory/1457308/f33d9

Ryan : I have to say comcast really pisses me off with this powerboost crap. I just dont see the BIG advantage. Yes you get a nice start off but what good is it if it only lasts 20-40 seconds? I really feel like comcast is just doing this for a cheap solution to keep people happy when what they really should be doing is working on making our connections faster. Its the perfect advertising method, I always see posters of their 16mb speed and in tiny * you see "Speeds reflect average download during powerboost with upgraded plan" Are you guys/gals really happy with powerboost? I guess it helps browsing the web and yea maybe our big downloads finish a min or two earlier, but come on if they increased or download from 6 to 10 that would benefit us a lot more then a quick boost.

Edit: I should have worded the subject differently its more the context that comcast uses it for marketing annoys me. Dont get me wrong I do understand what their trying to accomplish, but they advertise it as something totally different.
