| reply to bluepoint951 Re: SAFA (Stand Alone FastAccess) - Confirmed today
I am moving from NY to FL.
I called 800 757 6500 to order dry loop DSL several times. All the reps said DSL is not available at my address. But I know my neighbors (both to the left and right) have DSL. I told this to the reps and they tried to set up DSL for me but failed.
Any suggestions? Will getting a dial tone allow me to get DSL? |

I don't seem to remember a rash of failed pairs spreading out all over the place. With clean dry copper a lack of battery such as with a dry pair is not a problem add moisture and I don't care if there is battery on there or not there will be a problem.
As to why it's a tossup some CLEC's run battery on xDSL and some do not and I have even seen where one CLEC's ports will have battery one and the next one in sequence will not yet both are workers go figure. My guess is it all depends on which way the weather vane at the provisioning center was pointing that day.

| reply to RogerADSL said by RogerADSL :truedat Wayne! Being as you work on this stuff, is there anything to the loading the pair to reduce corrosion theory? Supposedly sealing current will keep marginal splices from becoming opens. The problem with that is doing so is a patch the real cure for a marginal splice is to re-splice it not try to weld it with sealing current. Does this apply to SAFA na. In order for sealing current to work current must flow and that is not happening with just battery being applied such as in SAFA.

| reply to RogerADSL Or asked another way.
Do alarm companies and other who use dry pairs load theirs or not? Seems to me they must if the anti-corrosion theory is true. Otherwise there would be constant headaches.

| reply to RogerADSL said by RogerADSL :I think the other reason they dicided to add dial tone on the DSL Direct Line is to give the line a load to reduce corrosion. It also helps to prevent the "a pair without battery is the spare pair I need" syndrome.

| reply to fearziz for safa customers there is still a dial tone for that but that does not mean that you can receive inbound call or do out bound calls as well. the main use of the dial tone is to make sure if that jack is working when you are experiencing problems with dsl sync issues. so for your security system i would suggest if you can contact you OEM for that so that they can tell if you it will work with VOIP just in case your going to shift to SAFA. |

| reply to bluepoint951 I decided to keep my AT&T pots line and DSL. But thanks to this forum, I was able to save almost $21 month by asking for one of the new plans. My total bill with taxes is now $77.55.
When I added up the cost of a stand-alone DSL plus Vonage, it didn't seem worth getting rid of my pots line. Plus I have a Dish Network receiver, fax machine, and security system all hooked up to pots.
Thanks! |

| reply to matt498 said by matt498 :Let me get this straight, you ran a CAT5 cable to the ped? I hope it was meant to be buried. What did the tech say when he came out and saw that? The pedestal is attached to the outside wall near to my office window. The cat5 cable was run through a sealed hole in the wall near to the pedestal (along with the connection for my Covad dedicated DSL). The AT&T tech said enjoy your new AT&T DSL service. -- We can never have enough of nature. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely where we never wander. Your order probably just didn't get completed correctly. I wouldn't be suprised if it ends up corrected some day. That would be fine with me as long as they don't screw up the DSL circuit in the process. It took almost a week of calls and emails after I was notified that the circuit was active to find someone who could understand that nobody had been to my location to physically connect the circuit. I did not have (and had never had) an existing POTS service at my current address, and the CAT5 cable that I ran out to the pedestal for this circuit was not connected to anything. | reply to fearziz said by fearziz :Hey All, I have a Security System that isn't monitored but it still needs a dial tone or it will bark at me. I found this out with my Comcast VOIP fiasco. I switched to AT&T Basic LAN & DSL 6.0 Service. Now that they offer the direct service I want to save money and end my phone service. I'm getting two different responses when I call AT&T about a dial tone. It is my understanding that you always have a dial tone for 911 calls. I'm afraid that if disconnect my phone service my dial tone will go away. Is this true? The internet folks say I still get a dial tone and the phone techs say I won't please help! You will get dial tone however you will not be able to make any calls...including 911.

With my AT&T Direct DSL circuit, I have dial tone and I can make outbound local calls, but I have been told that is a fluke. I think the official policy is that you will get a dial tone (because AT&T believes that a true dry circuit is not as reliable), but you will only be able to dial special ANAC test numbers. -- We can never have enough of nature.
