Re: SAFA (Stand Alone FastAccess) - Confirmed today

If you want two 6.0 SAFA lines, you just need to call ATT and order them. Should be that simple, but you can't make them work as if they are a single 12/1 connection. That would be port bonding and it requires work on your end and the DSLAM side, and it isn't a service that is sold. I'm not sure but it is possible you cold try to find something that will load balance on your end, but I have never tried to research it.

Yes thanks. I guess you need a system with three nics. Two to the ISP and one on the local network routing/(proxying?)/load balancing between the two. (Assuming it could put individual packets on the separate networks) Sound too costly and painful.

Thank you so much for this forum! Without all your information and advise I would now be paying a $40 cancellation fee for my new VOIP phone service because some idiot at AT&T told me there was 'no such thing' as stand alone DSL. I googled and found this forum and just called AT&T again and it was 'no problem'. Also the rep I spoke to didn't sound too happy with the idiot who told me that since he realized the company was about to lose me as a DSL customer also. Thanks again.

Re: Fastaccess DSL cust. - want to go to SAFA and CallVantage

I just signed up for DSL Direct 1.5M (Bundle 97) since I was told that I could not get DSL Direct 768K from the CSR.

I am in Bellsouth Palm Beach, FL territory. Has anyone had any luck getting the DSL Direct 768K in South Florida. If so, are you aware of what I need to ask for?

Are you sure? Or were the concessions that they needed to offer naked DSL AND a 768 for $10? Did it say that the 768 for $10 had to be naked?

AT&T/Bellsouth Merger Conditions
»www.fcc.gov/ATT_FINALMergerCommi···2-28.pdf

Promoting Accessibility of Broadband Service (Page 3)
Within six months of the Merger Closing Date, and continuing for at least 30 months from the inception of the offer, AT&T/BellSouth will offer to retail consumers in the Wireline Buildout Area, who have not previously subscribed to AT&T's or BellSouth's ADSL service, a broadband Internet access service at a speed of up to 768 Kbps at a monthly rate (exclusive of any applicable taxes and regulatory fees) of $ 10 per month.

ADSL Service (Page 8)
Within twelve months of the Merger Closing Date, AT&T/BellSouth will make available in its in-region territory an ADSL service capable of speeds up to 768 Kbps to ADSL-capable customers without requiring such customers to also purchase circuit switched voice grade telephone service ("Stand Alone 768 Kbps service"). AT&T/BellSouth will continue to offer the 768 Kbps service in a state for thirty months after the "Stand Alone 768 Kbps Implementation Date" for that state. For purposes of this commitment, the "Stand Alone 768 Kbps Implementation Date" for a state shall be the date on which AT&T/BellSouth can offer the Stand Alone 768 Kbps service to eighty percent of the ADSL-capable premises in AT&TBellSouth's in-region territory in that state. The Stand Alone 768 Kbps service will be offered at a rate of not more than $19.95 per month (exclusive of regulatory fees and taxes) . AT&T/BellSouth may make available such services at other speeds at prices that are competitive with the broadband market taken as a whole.

Well there you go. I thought they already started offering the 768 DSL Direct. I'm not that familiar with residential offers, though. I thought it was for new customer only. Didn't someone already post that?

gr

@comcast.net

it's pretty clearly offered for new residential customers in their terms and conditions at »www.bellsouth.com/consumer/inets···rms.html

when i tried on 12/1 to get the $19.95 plan, the sales rep said there was no dsl direct at that price. when i read her that page she asked her supervisor who claimed it wouldn't be available until the 11th. that seemed like complete bs. the sales rep seemed honest and interested (in receiving her commission if nothing else), but truly unable to do anything as it wasn't in her system and retention/customer service can provide credits, but sales reps and supervisors can't. and of course the customer service people need an account to credit. so good luck. theoretically if you found reps who wanted to honor the terms posted online (crazy idea i know!) you could hold for a customer service rep, get promised a credit, get transfered to sales, sign up for a higher priced account, and get transfered back to service to receive your credit on your new account. i don't have the time.

I have good faith that she was telling the truth. Things just might happen on the 11th

Everyone has been discussing if wireless is required to get Bundle97, but does anyone know what, if any, discounts are applied if you currently ARE a cingular/att wireless customer?

On the phone with the service tech now. She seems to think that ordering a stand-alone line will cause my phone number to be cancelled and a new number issued for reference. If you're going to port your number, you'll want to do it before you order the SAFA service.

Additionally, DSL lite is only offered as stand alone in a select few places. I had to upgrade to DSL Ultra to drop the phone line - but I still got a savings of about $19 per month.

It seems that the techs are becoming more educated on the SAFA lines, as I got through to a knowledgeable tech on the first try. Lucky me!

Hey All,

I have a Security System that isn't monitored but it still needs a dial tone or it will bark at me. I found this out with my Comcast VOIP fiasco. I switched to AT&T Basic LAN & DSL 6.0 Service. Now that they offer the direct service I want to save money and end my phone service. I'm getting two different responses when I call AT&T about a dial tone. It is my understanding that you always have a dial tone for 911 calls. I'm afraid that if disconnect my phone service my dial tone will go away. Is this true? The internet folks say I still get a dial tone and the phone techs say I won't please help!

I am surprised that you only got two different answers.

With my AT&T Direct DSL circuit, I have dial tone and I can make outbound local calls, but I have been told that is a fluke. I think the official policy is that you will get a dial tone (because AT&T believes that a true dry circuit is not as reliable), but you will only be able to dial special ANAC test numbers.

You will get dial tone however you will not be able to make any calls...including 911.

Your order probably just didn't get completed correctly. I wouldn't be suprised if it ends up corrected some day.

That would be fine with me as long as they don't screw up the DSL circuit in the process. It took almost a week of calls and emails after I was notified that the circuit was active to find someone who could understand that nobody had been to my location to physically connect the circuit. I did not have (and had never had) an existing POTS service at my current address, and the CAT5 cable that I ran out to the pedestal for this circuit was not connected to anything.

Let me get this straight, you ran a CAT5 cable to the ped? I hope it was meant to be buried. What did the tech say when he came out and saw that?

The pedestal is attached to the outside wall near to my office window. The cat5 cable was run through a sealed hole in the wall near to the pedestal (along with the connection for my Covad dedicated DSL). The AT&T tech said enjoy your new AT&T DSL service.

Oh ok, boy you had me confused for a second there. That would be the most logical install.

I decided to keep my AT&T pots line and DSL. But thanks to this forum, I was able to save almost $21 month by asking for one of the new plans. My total bill with taxes is now $77.55.

When I added up the cost of a stand-alone DSL plus Vonage, it didn't seem worth getting rid of my pots line. Plus I have a Dish Network receiver, fax machine, and security system all hooked up to pots.

Thanks!
