| [Discussion]Do you currently use any TVoIP services?
I've got Joost installed and love the interface. I just wish they had HD content as well
Vuze's GOT HD. It's bit-torrent based and is thus founded on the idea of users downloading videos from each other. Vuze's video community is built right into the program itself (as it should be!).
Then there's Babelgum, Zattoo, Brightcove and surely, there are many more to come.
Joost claims that it will revolutionize TV. The way the service works is pretty impressive, but without HD content they won't win me over that quickly..
Anyway, seeing as the forum's still bare-naked it was hard to come up with a good "first topic". It's unclear what specific discussions in here will eventually be about, so here's the first topic--with a healthy dose of openness and generality added in

| About a year (or two) ago there was a game I wanted to see Ran around looking, trialled a coupla programs, couldn't really get what I wanted or anything that convinced me to persue it further (lot of Chinese programs were found though) Since then I've been just reading when I stumble on something and keeping my eyes and ears open.

None of you use any of the mentioned IPTV services? Or some unmentioned thing, as I was anything but thorough with that very brief and quick list -- I r a lolcat. |

| said by Akasha :I don't. That's why I'm just gonna sit back and learn a little. I take it you are happy with Joost? I'm fairly happy, but you have to use it to understand what it's about. It's slick software with a very nice interface and features tons of content already. There are ads, but not like the ads you're used to on TV.. they're maybe 10 second spots and are pretty infrequent and really not that disruptive. Trust me when I say that I *hate* ads, and ads make me skip TV entirely. I very rarely watch TV.. because quite honestly, if I'm going to watch a show, I'll download it off the web somewhere and watch it whenever I like, without ads, in the quality I choose. I can't put up with ads. They are far too intrusive and annoying.. having said that, Joost's ads are very tolerable.
Anyway.. Joost's loaded with content from all sorts of TV channels around the planet and includes many music TV channels, Comedy Central and so much more. Click that to see the official Joost guide to what's playing right now. Their library of offered content keeps growing rapidly, and although as far as I know, Joost has yet to offer full length movies, they have a ton of shows, music videos and other TV content on there already. You can pause playback at any time, browse channel lists, search the whole library of Joost offerings right from the main interface, and you can even add and use widgets, which are also included. You could, for example, be watching something on Joost, then start up the "chat" widget and see who else is watching the same thing you are. Right there, you could start a discussion, ask a question, whatever you like, with people who are watching the same thing you are currently.
Personally, I've never run into anybody who just so happened to be watching the same thing I was watching at the time I was watching.. and the explanation for this is simple. There is a lot of content, and "show times" for the different shows on Joost are not fixed. In other words, you can watch whatever you want whenever you want. Because this is so, chances of bumping into other people who happen to be watching what you're watching simply are slim.
You can check out channel and show descriptions, give shows ratings, etc. etc. It's a pretty advanced and ambitious idea, and if there is a single thing about Joost I'd have to point out as sorely lacking about the service it's the fact that there is zero HD content inside. If you watch stuff in full-screen mode (which is the default), you are likely to be less than pleased with the image quality you'll see. Loading of channels, however, is very fast. It takes a few seconds to load stuff up before it starts streaming and playing on your machine.
My descriptions can only go so far.. -- I r a lolcat. |

Thanks for the detailed description, btw. |

| reply to illJazz BTW, there's one show I discovered last night that I thought was actually pretty funny. It's on VH1 and it's called "I hate my 30's". The humor is surprisingly good at times and made me laugh out loud more than once, and that's rare. I think of myself as a funny guy and I *love* to laugh, but it really is pretty rare that a TV show will actually make me laugh out loud.. at best, it will make me smile or smirk. This show actually had me laughing a few times, so in my book, they have to be doing *something* right -- I r a lolcat. |

| By the way: a big thing I failed to mention is the fact that Joost is still BETA software. Although in my experience, it is absolutely rock solid and has never crashed, I am simply pointing this out because, well, it makes sense to do so.
Another thing is that Joost, by the nature of the type of application it is and by how it works, has slightly steep system requirements. 1GB of RAM is recommended, a fast CPU is a must and it goes without saying that you can't stream all that content to your PC on a dial-up connection--you need broadband.
The official system requirements are on their website: »www.joost.com/systemrequirements.html
PHEW. You have NO IDEA how hard it was to find that page! I just surfed their site up and down and checked everywhere.. and eventually gave up. The way I found that system requirements page is by googling "joost system requirements". Crazy.. that's just bad :/ -- I r a lolcat. |

| I looked at internetTV, SopCast and one other, can't remember, totally deleted everything on that one including the installer. Right now my interest is catching an occasional game, my nephews live 2000 miles away and would like to be able to talk to them about their team, which until last year was bad enough they were never televised on the East Coast (Aints that the truth ).
I'm not paying for any super package, but if I can find a way... and maybe even catch some Juventis or Swedish league hockey...
Like I say, hoping to learn in this forum -- To be on a pedestal is to be in a corner |

| reply to illJazz Great thread! Seems not quite right to use Joost this way, but it's got to start somewhere right? Anyone that can compare another of the TVoIP to Joost please chime in. Maybe Joost will become a standard of comparison, or maybe another will.
That said, a basis for comparison is surely important to evaluate existing services as well as new offerings that become available. What factors should be of import? I've seen advertisement mentioned, HD capability, channel availability. List any that seem relevant!
FTR, I don't even own a TV, but catch clips (youTube style) on the internet all the time. I'll second illJazz's advertisement viewpoint. |

| reply to illJazz I've tried Joost a few months ago, but I haven't installed the latest version. The first version I tried worked pretty good, then the next one not so good. Since illJazz seems to think it has improved (even though it's still beta), I might give it a whirl again. -- JIHAD WATCH~~9275 DEADLY TERROR ATTACKS SINCE 9/11 |

| reply to illJazz I am using Joost and Veoh.
I find both of their selections to be severely lacking. Not much that I really would watch. Fact is I haven't watched anything on Joost for months now.
Veoh is not much better except it's more like Youtube in the fact hat anyone can upload video for others to watch. But this is also its down fall as now it is loaded with the same tired old video clips you see on youtube.
Video quality on Joost flat out sucks, Veoh is about the same but can vary depending on the source. |

| reply to illJazz TVToolbar? My 7yo likes to watch the 'toons. Drawback is it is a plug-in & resource hog on FF -so I disable it when not in-use. It acts as a front-end to access 50+ IPTV sites.
Joost: I watched one Joost show 3 months ago: windsurfing show -'Red Bull Storm Rising'. It was a little cumbersome to navigate. Seems last time I launched it.....well it didn't work & haven't revisited. Perhaps should dl the new version.
Streaming vs bt: ABC,CBS,NBC,WB all stream their prime-time shows with brief commercial interruption. Of those CBS has the best interface and the others are too jittery to enjoy. Much easier to bt those shows and movies. USA streams first episodes of each new series. We used to be hard-core VHS users (kids, homework, wife maintenance -no time for real-time TV), now we keep a list of shows & movies and batch download 2x/week -overnight since it kills my router and shuts-down PC when complete.
