 [Discussion] My Joost Adventure Begins

Day One

I download Joost at 8:14 PM EST on August 7, 2007.

All is well thus far. I hit "run" then "run" again. Check. I follow the directions and hit I accept the terms. Check. I have it set to run after completed. Check.

Now it gets funny.

First I get an error message of "This program is unavailable right now..." Blah Blah Blah. WHAT? Unavailable! How is this possible I just downloaded the dang thing. So I sit staring at my black screen with pretty little colored lines moving in the right hand bottom corner when all of a sudden I hear a commercial for GoArmy.com. I actually see the very end of this commercial now.

Okay, I'm making progress. I have no idea how or why this is happening, but I am seeing a commercial now. Ought oh - it just became a full screen. Oh great! A full sized pretty black screen now with colorful lines.

What do I do now?
Control, Alt, Delete I think to myself. NO, no - not on this OS. I answer myself. Escape! Hit Escape! So I hit escape and my big black screen becomes a little black screen again. Whoo hoo! I found out that I can make it go big, then small. PROGRESS people!!

What's this now... a show is appearing. Why it's the "I hate my 30's" show that I have heard about. But why did this come up? OMG NO! Big black screen is back.

By now I'm thinking either this thing is possessed or I have no friggin' clue what I'm doing. Although I do believe that I am not hitting anything.

Give it some time. It's new. I try the escape button again with no luck. I start hitting buttons. Work buttons work. I find out that F8 works like a mute button. Good to know. ;)

Alright - I take a deep breath and close my eyes. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. I open my eyes.

My big black screen is once again little. I hit escape again. This time I try to gently tap the escape button. IT WORKED! I now see a screen about channels. Yee haw! I try to pick the cartoon one. I click. Nothing happens. I wait. Nothing happens. I click again. This time I get a commercial for V Cast Mobile tv something or other.

I need to just walk away. Walk away... :)

to be continued...

Update ~

Late last night I started to mess with it again. I do believe that I have started to master the whole USE THE ARROW KEYS thing. Duh!

I was able to scroll through channels. Not very many, I might add. Not sure if I need to go somewhere and change the channels that are showing or if they just aren't available to me (yet, maybe). I am at work right now, so my continued education of Joost is temporarily suspended until I get home again.

After scrolling through some screens, I was able to find out that the "i" key brings up a menu to be able to pause, or play a show. PLUS using the space bar also paused a show. I started to watch "Clockstoppers", but then I got tired and went to bed.

So - I'm making progress. Not yet a master at the whole deal, but I am improving.

Anybody have any hints for me or are you all just sitting back and enjoying my experience? Which, btw, I don't mind. Happy to report my findings for all to see (and laugh at and enjoy. Maybe even learn something from. )

Enjoying your tales of adventure! (I must not be very adventurous, I would have already uninstalled the thing given the behavior you've described so far.)
Sounds like commercials are still quite prevalent, even in this medium.
(Which is a major reason for not having a TV personally; the other reason being the lack of programming worthy of the time investment.)

Channels on Joost

All channels are subject to availability in your region.

Went one link deeper into Comedy Central itself.
A listing of individual shows? comes up.
...
Searching: 'John Stewart'
(didn't come up with what I was looking for)

Conclusion: while a 'popular channel' may be listed, a 'popular show' on that channel may not be available to watch?

Re: [Discussion] My Joost Adventure Begins

Day 2

So I messed with this again and here is what I've learned.

Once the screen (formerly known as the black screen with pretty little colored lines) comes up, hit "i". This brings up the menu for the channels. Then I go to the little booklike thingy on the left hand side that says "My Channels".

NOTE: I go there because apparently I haven't figured out if I can actually do anything on the first menu screen yet. I hit the arrow keys and nothing happens. I click my mouse (Not in that way! Get your minds out of the gutter people ) and again, nothing happens. That is why I just click on the little book thingy.

So I get to my channel listings and use the arrow keys to scroll through them. Up and down through the channels. Right to see more shows on whatever channel I pick. Here's the best part - Yesterday I couldn't figure out how to get one to play that I liked. I clicked the mouse, I hit the "s" key for start (apparently that was wrong) - nothing worked. Well today I figured out that the "Enter" key is my friend. YES! Choose a channel, pick a show and hit "ENTER" and it will play. Who would 'a thunk it?! (Obviously not me yesterday)!

I'm feeling good about myself. I'm playing this and that and then what happens? The full screen pops back up. What in the world did I hit - again!? I hit the "esc" button, but nothing happens this time. I hit the F8 and then remember that was the mute. So I hit the "backspace" button. Guess what? It takes me to the show that I was watching before I started watching what I am currently watching. (Did you follow all that?)

I found a new toy. I found a new toy! I finally did get the screen to go back down but I am not sure if it had to do with hitting the "esc" several more times and/or hitting the "i" and spacebar repeatedly. (Trial and error, what a fantastic way to learn!)

I didn't come across not 1 commercial this time. But I also might add that really nothing playing on these channels is very interesting to me. Hoping better things pop on soon or I figure out how to get them. For now, it's okay because I am still learning.

My conclusion for today is - I am learning even more things about how to operate Joost successfully. And they better give me interesting things to watch or I'll get bored soon.

to be continued...

Not having installed Joost at this point, I did some browsing on their site. I'm guessing that you can navigate from the link in above post directly to a show. (I clicked on one just for grins, and it let me know that I apparently hadn't installed Joost yet.) GLHF!

Damn your writing is funny

As lilhurricane See Profile said, it's fun to follow your adventure. Keep the thread updated! The issues you are experiencing are strange. I have none. Everything works as it should. The image quality is just real shitty :/

And content, I'll admit, is somewhat lackluster. Just give it time. Joost is supposed to launch officially by the end of the year, and by "launch officially" I mean become a real product that is not beta.

Enjoy!

Sorry to leave you all hanging (or maybe even on pins and needles), but I have been a little busy with dance registration, school shopping and watching the meteor shower.

My adventure will continue again soon. Please do not hold your breath though - with the avatars around here, I would have a hard time telling who was turning blue and who's avatar is just blue.

I've been playing with Joost for a few days, and this thing is great. I've been watching the series Lexx.

I really miss that series. Havent seen it since it was on Sci-Fi, forgot how good it is. Video Quality is awesome, no skipping, easy to find what i'm looking for.

Only thing that doesnt work well is their search function, which cant find "Lexx" even when it's what is currently playing.

If you look down at the lower left of the screen theres a catalogue icon, from there you can browse/add channels that arent on your default channels listing.

Ive already seen all that I care of their programming, it hasnt updated in like 3 months.
What I have seen is very good, even if it isnt HD
Ive found that the error you got about availability of some shows can be ignored, must be a beta bug.

Thanks older dog See Profile & gaforces See Profile!!

I did figure out the whole double click thing as well as the arrow key thing. BIG help.

I will have to go home and play around with the channels adding thing. I found the channels that are already on there, but I couldn't figure out how to add more or delete some. I will try once I get home.

Re: [Discussion] My Joost Adventure Begins

I believe my Joost Adventure has come to an end.

I was having issues with my computer and had to reformat it. Needless to say, Joost is gone now. From the little experimenting that I did with it, it wasn't a "WOW! I need this again" thing.

Sorry. I know a lot of you really love yours, but I really wasn't all that impressed. Maybe I'll try again at a later date. First I need to get my home computer up and running again.
