Re: [Kerio 2.x] Newbie Questions

All I can say is that I've never had any problems whatsoever with Kerio 2.1.5 (downloaded from here), and I've installed it on 4 machines (all running XP SP2).

However, I have seen posts in forums on fwdrv.sys causing problems. You might want to search for fwdrv.sys in forums at DSL reports, wilder's security or Google.

The problems you describe doesn't sound quite like the ones I read fwdrv.sys being known to cause though, but I haven't read them in detail since I have no problems.

Seems all security programs (firewalls, AVs etc) have serious issues for some persons... I'm glad my system works with Kerio since I don't like the options - I've had serious problems with ZA, and Comodo has had much critique for the present version. If you try out Comodo, be sure to set a restore point first...

Turns out that this 2.x version has a corrupt fwdrv.sys driver in it which causes my Perfect Disk defrag to crash.

Any none sunbelt fixes to that?

TY DavidGGG:

1) I have turned off the check for updates
2) I have added some blocked applications for practice, as you say the new rules join the bottom of the list
3) Have yet to read your references but will

Again thanks for quick response to my post

1. There will not be any updates since it's discontinued officially, and I don't think you can register it. It never expires. You should not check "check for updates". If you want to understand why, you can read about the historical background here: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiny_and_K···irewalls

2. There isn't anything that is called "learning mode" I think, although every time an unknown application tries to get outbound access, there is a popup that lets you decide if it should be allowed or not - this of course resembles what is called learning mode for other firewalls. There will be more popups in the beginning, since there are many unknown programs at first. If you tick "create appropriate rule" then a rule is added and you wont be asked again for this application. To get the best security, you can customize these rules by editing them. You may also have to move the new rules up in the list. Read help file, FAQ and BZ's rules in this forum to understand this better.

3. You can save backup of the settings in the tab "Miscellaneous". You should also make sure your settings are ok, I suggest you look at the mentioned help files and my post "for Dummies".

I just installed Kerio 2.1.5 engine created 30/Apr/2003, driver 3.0.0 15/Apr/2002.
Source via this forum.

Some adminsitrivia:

1) My version is not registered, no licence #, during install process there was something about 30 days and you are gone? Is that for real?

2) Learning mode duration, does it end on it's own?

3) Apart from answering popups is there anything else I should be doing? Like backing up settings? How?
