[Eastern Ontario] Looking to jump from Bell to Cogeco.

I'm a college student. On my own for the first time. It's only been three (or maybe four?) weeks since I moved out here to Kingston, ON. When it came to internet access, I originally wanted to go with Cogeco, but in the heat of the moment I decided to get internet via Bell while I was getting my phone at BellWorld. I think the mistakes started right there.

From day one it's been a headache for me. The information they provided to hook up my modem was useless - I had to call Bell to get it fixed right from the start, and it took about a dozen restarts and "adjustments" to simply get connected to the internet. The tech (tier 1, I assume) told me that there was an unusual amount of noise on my line and didn't understand the reason for it - but offered no assistance in clearing it up. From then on, my connection speeds have capped at about 1.5mbps down and 350kbps up. My ping in games sit around the 400-500 mark regardless of what I'm playing, downloads take forever... it's ridiculous.

So, what I'm asking is if it's worth making the jump to Cogeco. The price is about the same ($50.00 per month), but I'm not sure if things will get any better. Anyone in the Kingston area wish to give me some insights?

Thanks.

Sounds like a very good move for you as long as you don't mind issues with torrent upload speeds.

It'll only be a problem if you're a complete noob and have no idea what you're doing. If you have some brains and can properly configure your computer your torrents will work fine...dont believe the clueless nubs.

My God, is it not possible for a day to go by without the same kids throwing in useless two cents and arguing about torrents. We've established that the majority can use torrents fine, and that there are also many who can not get torrents to work. Can't you keep the comments to the forums you're already participating in without soiling everyone else's thread?

The guy asked for the quality of service in Kingston, he didn't ask for your two cents on your torrent agenda.

I've been dealing with some noticeably high pings lately in games, and like I said above the tech stated that my line seemed "noisy". I connected to my modem's ip address via firefox and found that my ADSL connection now had this added on to the "UP" statement - Interleaved-G.DMT. Marvelous. So I take it I'm paying for a connection speed that I'm not even getting, and rather than contacting me or sorting out the problem when I called them the first three times, they've thrown on a quick fix to increase stability (and pings along with it).

Screw it. I've had enough with Sympatico. No way to go but up from here.

Dear Urbanriot and Best Ninja,

I really think you guys need to take a break from these boards. The personal attacks are bit much, dontcha think?

The "majority" cannot use torrents fine, the vocal minority likes to shout that they can.

If what you stated was the case, there would not be a new thread on this subject almost weekly. I was giving this guy a fair warning, I never told him to avoid Cogeco.

Have a nice day and try to relax.

Kingstonstudent,

Besides the aforementioned torrent upload throttling issue, you'll find that Cogeco service in eastern Ontario is quite excellent. Friends of mine @ Queen's have no issues. Get rid of those high pings and switch!

The "majority" of people don't post here - they're happily using Cogeco and have no need to post on this forum. There's a small minority of people, or the same anonymous person, that keeps posting here with torrent problems and putting in the his little digs here and there. And there's an even smaller vocal minority that stick around these boards and don't have any problems.

You don't see 350,000 people posting here with problems...

Well, in the event that you did have these problems with Cogeco, you'd at least have an Ontarian on the line to sort you out. And failing that, you could always post here to someone who cares.

For gaming, any east coast server will give you an awesome ping, whether it be New York or Toronto (where most East Coast servers are located). Even Chicago is decent, depending on what game you play.

When I played Counter-Strike, I received excellent latency from Chicago, Toronto, and New York servers. Provided that the server admins kept up with the maintenance and didn't overload their server's connection.

I usually get a 21 - 33 ping on good New York servers. Strangely, I get a better ping from the majority of NY servers than I do from the TO servers. Montreal usually fits somewhere in between.

Chicago servers usually find me somewhere 40 - 60, which is playable for some games, and others which require precision it can get a little spotty. Stuff like World of Warcraft, you could play with a 120 ping and not even know.

Chicago gave me 25-35ms and the odd one which was 40ms, Toronto about less than 20 (I used to goto one server which I had a 7-8ms with a few people and 15-20ms fully loaded). New York gave me 30-55ms. Montreal was about 40ms-60ms.

My experience has been that Cogeco's peering and routing can be a wonky at times if you're playing on US servers in the mid-west or on the west coast. This isn't something I noticed when I was with Sympatico.

When I was with Sympatico, to reach the BBR CS server that used to exist, they routed from Toronto to Vancouver, increasing the latency quite a bit. Also, that it didn't help I had Interleaving enabled on my line because I was too far from the CO. Plus, I could not sync to the 3Mbps profile, so I was stuck on 1.5Mbps. After a couple calls to Sympatico and talking to a "Level 2 Tech". Nothing was wrong. Whatever. A month or so after that call, I switched to Cogeco. Just after the Blackout.

Here's what the routing looked like more often than needed to be. Normally I could get 75ms to this site and that was the best I've seen with them.
