anon : Unfortunately these newer inside only ONTs only came out about 1 month ago. If a whack to the ONT throws the system on or off, then the problem is most likely the very well known issue with the 612 ONT that the connectors do not pinch down properly and come loose after a while. I would definitely insist upon the integrated BBU/PSU/ONT. I have a very strong feeling it will solve at the very least the phone and internet problem.

KA3SGM :
said by vztech323 :

If you're still allowing Verizon an opportunity to fix the problem, then make sure these steps are followed.

#1 - The ONTs whose firmware version ends in .08 are no good, make sure they haven't been replacing the ONT with the same leftover stock of faulty ONTs. make sure firmware version ends in .14. (Its printed on the box the ONT comes in)
#2 - I would switch to one of the newer 612-JI. These are Integrated BBU/PSU/ONT that can only be installed inside. The advantage is that it includes a preconnectorized cable that goes from the BBU to the ONT. This eliminates the problems I've seen on 90% of the repair tickets I've been out on. What happens is that the existing green connectors inside the ONT and BBU do not pinch down properly on the BLACK and RED wires on the power wire. They particularly seem to come lose during the summer time as the whether gets hotter. What ends up happening is that sometimes they make contact and sometimes they don't. Also if there is a problem with the Orange/blue/brown/slate/green wires these will cause intermittent problems. For example if the orange wire is not making good contact, it will falsely tell the ONT that it is running on battery power when it is not. Anyway, long story short, the newer integrated ONT/BBU units eliminate any possible wiring problems between the ONT and BBU.
#3 - Have them change your splitter port at the hub. Just because the light looks good when the tech checks it, it doesn't mean that there isn't a sporadic problem with either the splitter itself, or the jumper the splitter is on. I would even go so far as having them change the PON card you're currently on by putting you on a different splitter altogether(If you are on Splitter A @ the hub, have them change it to splitter B)
#4 - Have them change the drop terminal port you are on to ensure no intermittent problems on the fiber from hub to drop terminal
#5 - Have battery itself replaced
#6 - We recently received notification that the ONTs have an interference problem with any devices close by operating in the 345 MHz frequency range, make sure no such devices (mainly certain garage door openers) are plugged into same circuit.

As an aside, I do not believe that the new img will resolve any PQ problems. More than likely the problem is an expensive piece of equipment that Verizon does not want to spend the money to replace. If a software upgrade does fix the problem, then great, but right now I have my doubts. By the way, have you tried messing with the screen options on the HD boxes? Turn off the STB, and then hit Menu. (This is different than the diagnostics screen). Play around with the screen resolution settings just out of curiosity to see if anything changes with your PQ issues. Perhaps a firmware update to the box, changed these settings to something less than optimal for your tv. I doubt it may solve the problem, but just out of curiosity you can try it.

Where the hell was a tech like you back in February???

I can't believe I am only hearing this now.

I would welcome the ONT placed inside. I asked the original installer to do just that back in 9/2005, but they were only to install them outside or in a garage, mine would go in the basement, so that was not currently allowed.

The ONT is whack sensitive, a good whack can turn it on and off. I have opened it up when it seems to have died and seeing no lights lit, a good tap with the end of the can wrench usually brings it back to life.

The techs have tightened the terminals on the green connectors, so it is the terminal to the ONT connector, not wire to the green terminal.

They have tried a different port on the same splitter, and a different port on a different splitter, thus different PON card. But that was before they found dirt in the tap port at the end of the drop cable.

Being a HAM Radio Operator for 20 years, I actually own a Frequency counter, and it intermittently, but not always, seems to show the ONT radiating spurious signals in the 320-420MHz range(counter antenna held close to the BBU wiring),
I get some digital 'hash' at the bottom of the 70cm HAM band(420MHz), but since my garage is at the other end of the house, my garage door opener is on a different circuit, has 40 feet of separation from the ONT, has never skipped a beat.

The drop terminal was just cleaned on July 3rd, as it was full of some sort of light blocking crud. They were going to completely replace it, but due to loss of service to other customers they stopped at a good alcohol swab out. Although there is now a renewed call to cut the fiber, and fusion splice a new tap into the line.

I will try to go out in the daylight tomorrow and get a serial number or firmware revision off the ONT.

Thanks for the information, I will see where this takes things next week!!
--
We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat !!
