$6 billion a year

said by Article :

Nationwide, the cable television industry loses about $6 billion a year to theft of service, Time Warner spokeswoman Karen Baxter said. "It's a problem. It's been a problem," Baxter said.
I have to wonder about that figure. Seems kinda like the music industry claiming music downloads are lost revenue.

Of course, with illegal cable hookups there is the possibility of wiring mistakes being made that DO cause degredation of service and real-world loss. But $6 Billion seems a bit of a stretch.

Agreed

How can you 'lose a sale' you never made (or had a chance to make)? Usually the cable stealer's are not gonna be calling you for normal service, so nothing is lost here.

I think it's all about the new corp. greed syndrome that we, as consumers, have been dealing with the last few years, and, frankly, I'm sick of it.

I can see where the cable companies can lose service revenue.

The channel operators will turn a blind eye though. Those extra viewers still mean more money for them.

There's more "Warrens" than just one in each state. Considering Warren had 170 KNOWN theives, multiply that by 50, because thats how many states the US has, and you have 8500, multiply that by $50 a month, and you have $425,000 in losses just for one "Warren" per state with 170 people per state stealing cable. Make that 10 "Warren's" per state, and you have $4,250,000. Now we know that there are more than 50 CITIES per state. See where this figure is going? Math is great, isn't it?

where's the $6 billion a year? with your example, seems like the true number is much less than even 1 billion a year. also consider that not everyone will be paying $50/month. some are on the basic package at $10-$20 a month, and some won't pay for it no matter what $0.

oh those cable companies and their exaggeration!

Its accurate.
Its not loosing a sale you never had, its loosing a potential customer. Well over 70% that are disconected for theft sign up for service. Take the average bill in that given area, take into account the cost of fighting theft and that figure is completely beleiveable.

Seriously with a 70% uptake on cable after found stealing you think there is no real loss?
And you think a company whose product is being rampantly stolen is GREEDY because they, odly enough, dont want it stolen is a corporate symdrome...and the poor consumers have to "deal with" corporations being upset about theft?

Guess what, my son ran out of applejuice this morning. No worries, Ill just walk down to CVS and steal a bottle of it. How DARE MOTTS charge me for applejuice for my poor 3 year old son!
Im ENTITLED to free applejuice!! OUTRAGE!!!!!

p.s. webmaster steve, please set me up three free websites with unlimited bandwidth.. I could pay but, hey, Im sure there is loads of space you have that isnt being used? Your not doing anything with it.. why should I have to pay for it?

Realy people... I get more and more disgusted as time goes by.. where the hell are your morals? I weep for your children.

Can't argue with that. I think it was the invention of the telephone that started this decline
