| zoomtown speed upgrade
hi just thought i would post a quickee, switched from insight to zoomtown a couple days ago and the tech guy told me within the next couple months they are planning to upgrade to 10mb, of course not many people are gonna actually see the 10 but from where i am (latonia) he told me i should reach around 7mb. |

1 edit | If this is true then it's yet another increase I can't take advantage of. What the Cincinnati Bell bigwigs need to realize is that only those who live relatively close to their CO's are able to see these higher speeds. The more they increase it the closer the threshold gets to the CO. It's all pie in the sky for those who do live very close to their CO, but those further out get shafted.
What they need to do is work on beefing up their infrastructure so they can deliver faster speeds further out. Of course they're not going to do this because it requires putting forth effort and spending money. |

| That's the problem with Cincinnati Bell. They are not willing to set up remote DSLM's so that people like myself who tried to get DSL at my location since 1999 and can't because I'm to far from the CO.
Why can't they do FIOS in this area? Copper stinks. |

| reply to tin23uk one thing i did notice that really sucked was when the guy installing the phone line realised that cincy bell hadnt mailed out my modem, so he got one from the truck and luckily while he was here he tested the line and found i was only getting 3mb, he called cincy bell and spoke to someone on the line and asked them to see if we can get 5mb, which they managed to do, point is if they had mailed out my modem like they should have i would only be reaching 3mb luckily the guy was here to test it and raise it. im only reaching just over 4 when i run the tests on dsl reports but still its better than the 3 i would have got.
i think you are right they should be making sure that all customers can get a decent speed no matter where they are or at least be compensated by paying for what you can get, like if you can only reach a quarter of what others can you should only pay a quarter of what those that reach the max do. but i just switched form insights 10 mb connection and will never go back. their speeds were great but i wasnt about to start dealing with the phone calls telling me im using too much bandwidth the way i see it i was paying for their connection and should be able to use what im paying for, doubt they would like it if i walked into their office and told them the bill was too much so here's half.
i would much rather deal with the slower speed than being told i couldnt use everything i was paying for. |

| reply to tin23uk switching to the faster speeds is a manual practice or something.. when they first went to 3mb i had to call and ask why i wasnt there.." oh i see that..let me fix that" done.. great.. guess i get the perks living near a co.. downloading at 620kb is awsome.. most times its around 580 but get on a site thats 10mb or above and it will max me out.. Had cinbell since 86 and zoomtown when it came out.. i left once to get RR when it first rolled out.. RR was the biggest POS i ever used fought with them for couple months.. come get this pos.. ended that and been with zoomtown ever since... i dont need cable and never will. now why did i start getting a 74 ip? i did hear they are doing fiber in a new sub. near west chester.. that will be nice |

| reply to tin23uk I was with Cincinnati Bell for YEARS. They installed Zoomtown for me even though I was outside the service area. No, I didn't know that at the time. They have been promising speed increases forever and a day. 8 Mb was what I was told 3 years ago. They still aren't there.
A quick switch to Insight and I am getting 8.5+ today. No future promise that everyone talks about for 2 or 3 years. Today. The speed with Zoomtown sucks (my sister lives about a mile from her CO and she can't get the 5 that they promise now) unless you can stand on your front porch and spit on the CO. Even then Insight offers a faster package for the same or a little less.
I can't explain why I hung with them for so long, and in Northern Kentucky where the cable is so much faster why people still sign on with them. |

| reply to tin23uk I'm at what used to be considered outer border. They won't tell me any more. Every several months, I call hoping that infrastructure work has been done. Generally, they've been able to bump me -- last time (May) to 1.8. Now, since the 5mbps upgrade, my speed has dropped to a consistent 1.3. I call yesterday, and they say they can no longer make adjsutments. Speed is auto-determined. This sucks. All the DSL speed tests now, and I'm not even on the first few pages. It isn't right that I pay the same price for 1.3 that others pay for 5. Funny thing is, digital cable seems to also have me at outer limits -- likely if I went to Warner, I wouldn't get their promised speed either. Gotta love Forest Park. |

1 edit | I definitely agree that people who can't get the full speed should not be paying full price.
In other news my speed went up again. I was sitting somewhere between 1.3-1.4Mbps, now today I'm getting over 1.6Mbps. Downloads from good servers are right at 200k/sec now. CBT line techs are probably replacing crap lines and components along the route. Hopefully they keep it up!

| reply to tin23uk i just got ZT today and my installer said to me as well that 10mbit down is coming... though, you have to be pretty close to the CO -- I'm getting about 4.6 down and 650 up so I'm happy.
I was using TWC and the uploads just sucked... So far, I am digging it. |

| You are right about TWC's upload speed stinking; I think it was 384K, whereas ZT is supposed to be 768K (I seem to get 500-600K on upload though). I owned two houses for a while last year, the old one with TWC and the new one ZT. I had a VPN setup between the two houses and I could definitely tell the difference in the upload speed when I transferred files from the TWC to the ZT houses versus the other way around.
However, I could also tell that TWC had a faster download speed when downloading files from the internet as opposed to from across the VPN, although at the time ZT was 3mb rather than 5.

| reply to tin23uk OMG I got Zoomtown and I havent turned off my Roadrunner yet. But since it has been installed no matter how many times the cool tech guy comes out, my modem keeps having "Out Discard Packets", and that the ONLY problem. I'm trained at 6Mbps, and no amount of line change fixes this. Just as I'm typing this my westell reports 65! It happens the more I transmit and it happens no matter what pc I have it connected to.The tech has switched my line down the street and as a last resort is coming tomorrow to remove the other phone outlets in my apartment. Any suggestions? I wouldnt care but my online games keep disconnecting. There are never any in errors. |
