It started as a variation of Minix, but Torvalds soon rewrote everything he took from Minix into original Unix-like equivalents or replacements, so there was nothing left of Minix in it. If I recall correctly, Tannenbaum, author of Minix, has agreed with this assessment and approves of Torvalds' work, though they disagree about the merits of micro- and monolithic kernels.
