I look forward to the onslaught of Chinese made PCI tuners which will support atsc/ntsc, QAM, digital cable and switched digital, no on demand, no big deal, no ppv, no big deal.
Lets see $400 for a media center pc and prices dropping it can be made cheaper. $80 500 gig drives. Oh yeah I see the pc replacing the set top box real soon.
Oh yeah I will laugh my ass off when they make knock offs of the cable card based PCI tuners. Look at the iphone knock off.
I for one welcome our new Chinese, technology cloning, overlords.

I highly doubt they would be allowed to be imported to the US. Plus HTPC will continue to increase but they won't beat out a set top box.
1. too technical
2. Have to pay upfront
3. have to upgrade it yourself
4. It brakes you fix it not the cable company
If I had a need for a DVR (i download stuff i miss) I would definitely go with a HTPC over a set top box but I know what I am doing unlike say my friends. | |

It's called CableLabs. With Vista HP or Ult. It has the ability to use HD Tuners with CableCard. One lil problem M$ and CableLabs make it that to use CableCard HD Tuners the mainboard has to be certified OCCUR compliant. The only systems that are OCCUR compliant are made by OEM'S (DELL, HP ect.). The DIY types here (me included) are frozen out. So now instead of getting a TivoHD for say 300.00 plus fees. You have to pay anywhere 1500.00 to 3k for a compliant system. Sorry but for the privilege of seeing recorded material that is just plain nuts.
Personally I'm seriously thinking about a TivoHD. Yes it costs more upfront but i don't do VOD and the interface is just plain better then the SA8300HD I'm using now. I'm not happy about it, just realistic. | |

Don't you think they will do it here too ? There are not many parts that have the Trusted Platform chips embedded yet.
I see hacks that will allow them to work with clones. It's already shown Vista can be hacked 8 ways to and from hell. It won't be long until they clone em and patch the Os to allow them.
I despise control struggles like this. I buy my pc I buy the service. Let me use the cable card how I want. When prices drastically increase people turn to piracy, I see this as no different.
