DSL Modem

Just switching my telephone and DSL service from Caviler to AT&T. The phone was switched this morning and the DSL is supposed to be switched over by 8pm tonight. The DSL modem will not arrive for another 3-5 days. Here are my questions.

1. Could I use the modem I currently have to get DSL service once it's turned on? It's the modem I got with Talk America before they switched to Cavalier. Or is the AT&T modem special?

2. With AT&T will my set up change in any way? Currently all of my computers are wireless. I have the modem connected to a belkin wireless router, just plug and play no issues. With AT&T will my set up change at all? Can I just hook up the modem when it comes and start browsing???

Thanks for your time.

If you can configure your modem to G.dmt, VPI/VCI at 0/35, and ATM encapsulation at LLC, you should be able to use the modem you currently have. Also, some older Alcatel modems were configured on the outer (Line 2) pair of conductors on the RJ-11 plug. You may need to adapt to that.

Don't know if this helps or not but the modem that I have was able to handle a speed of 6mbps.

It depends upon the modem. You need to be able to access a configuration page. Might be HTTP, might be Telnet. I don't know about all modems out there; only had a Westell WireSpeed B90-36R516, and replaced it with a SpeedStream 4100 later.

The obvious thing to do is give the modem type and version So answers can be for the specific modem inst of wags....

I'm at work right now and the best I can tell you is that it's a modem I received from Talk America last summer. I'll have to check it when I get home and see if there's any info listed on it.

Not to get your hopes up and unless things have changed. Once you come back to AT&T usually it's 5 more business days before your DSL will go live.

At least that's the way it's typically done.

Well we started the process to switch over early last week. Like I said a Telephone tech came to the house and switched the phone over this morning. Then I called Customer support to find out when the DSL would be connected. They said by 8pm tonight. I'll try not to get my hopes up though, may not matter until I get the modem anyway?

Hopefully CS was correct. Depending on the mode and access to it's interface you should be able to configure it. If not then you wait for the modem like you said.

Is it one of these modems?

Yes! It's the black/blue one!

Called AT&T last night to see if I'd be connected by 8pm.
"No, that takes about a week once we've switched your line over." Grrrrrrrrrr!

Great, no web for a week. Hope that they're better than Cavalier in the end, they were just awful.

For the heck of it even though the modem should arrive around the same time as my service goes live. Has anyone been able to use the Paradyne modem with there AT&T service?

Couldn't hurt to have a spare.

I think it will work with at&t yahoo hsi.

Have you ever used the modems web interface?
What type of connection did you have with Talk America / Cavalier?

Nope, never used the web interface for it. I just had to plug it in and it worked.

I had a 6mbps DSL connection, the highest one they offered.

If you're willing hook the modem to a computer
Look at the properties for the lan connection the modem is connected to.

Does it have a IP address and default gateway?

Anything else to look for?

If after connecting the modem to a computer, if the computer gets a IP address and other TCP/IP info, that may indicate that the modem is not a bridge modem.

Since you're a new subscriber you should review this FAQ it will give you a overview of setting up a new account.

That's the set up to get my DSL working?

Once that's all set up will I be able to hook up the modem (lets say from at&t for now) directly to my belkin wireless router without having it attached to my computer?

It's funny when I had a cable modem and Talk America/Cavalier all you needed to do was hook the modem up to the phone line and then hook into the router. Never used any install discs before. I'm gonna miss those days.

Yes, you'll have three options for connecting the modem and router.
