Different rules and/or better information.

For example, my home according to CPSOS, the AT&T prequal tool, says I'm 9600 feet out on an RT. That was good enough for 6 Mbps service when I moved in over 3 years ago. But since it was marginal, I downgraded to 3 Mbps. Now when I rerun it, I only show 3 Mbps available to me.

Covad, OTOH, would offer me 6 Mbps for my loop for the longest time. Covad only runs DSL through a CO, which would have been about 18K feet out per CPSOS. Well over what I should be able to get. I reran the Covad prequal tool recently, and I couldn't even get DSL.

AT&T is looking for stability on their loops. Not because they want to keep it up for you, because a stable loop is an easier to maintain loop. We were then told that they couldn't offer us the Elite package which we were told we could get in the first place. Seems every time we call them we get some different answer.

Called the Cable company and there gonna show up Thursday to test our line, since we had problems before and that's why we left them. Hopefully there service is solid cause we're out of options now.

Yes, you'll have three options for connecting the modem and router.

It's funny when I had a cable modem and Talk America/Cavalier all you needed to do was hook the modem up to the phone line and then hook into the router. Never used any install discs before. It depends upon the modem. You need to be able to access a configuration page. Might be HTTP, might be Telnet. I don't know about all modems out there; only had a Westell WireSpeed B90-36R516, and replaced it with a SpeedStream 4100 later.

Also, some older Alcatel modems were configured on the outer (Line 2) pair of conductors on the RJ-11 plug. You may need to adapt to that.

The phone was switched this morning and the DSL is supposed to be switched over by 8pm tonight. The DSL modem will not arrive for another 3-5 days. Here are my questions.

1. Could I use the modem I currently have to get DSL service once it's turned on? It's the modem I got with Talk America before they switched to Cavalier. Or is the AT&T modem special?

2. With AT&T will my set up change in any way? Currently all of my computers are wireless. I have the modem connected to a belkin wireless router, just plug and play no issues. With AT&T will my set up change at all? Can I just hook up the modem when it comes and start browsing???
