Can anyone tell me why I get this message "Warning: ISP upload compression was detected. Your upload speeds may be inaccurate" when I run speedtest? I used the flash speedtest here on DSLReports.

You sure?

I bet you have some kind of accelerator somewhere, like Google's or some spyware version.

OK, never mind, getting it too. I know I don't have that, because I'm using Linux on my home box.

The test is going nuts though on my T1 here at the office though. Kind of fun to watch it swing the needle all the way around.

I think it's safe to say there is something broken on the test. I know AT&T doesn't use any compression.

I have it too. Mediacom almost a week ago, had someone cut fiber optics that affected parts of GA, AL, and FL. Was out over a day and then again 2 days later. Download and upload has been greatly affected. I don't use an accelerator. I am not sure how long before it is back to "normal".

Might be something wrong on DSLReports end. I'm getting the same warning and I'm not running any type of accelerator, etc. I'm also using AT&T so maybe it's something with them. I don't get the warning every time though, so who knows..

I have seen that myself, as well as reported in other ISP forums. I wonder if the test is detecting NAT, but not reporting it correctly?

When I did a speed test through Miami I didn't get that message, but when I used Ft. Worth I got the same error.

I just did a test to Sprint in Ft Worth and didn't see any error. I'm using FireFox 2.0.0.6, AT&T 3008/512 service from Round Rock (Austin), TX.

I just ran the Flash test to Ft. Worth and my results show the same warning that most are receiving. My speeds are within the range of my connection speed. 3000/400.

I get mixed results!

On my Elite line which is an old true static IP line direct to the CO I do not get the message.

On my Pro line which is a PPPoE dynamic line via CO I do get the message.

Both tests ran from the same machine multiple times with the same results each time.

I also VPN'd into a work network that has PPPoE Pro but sticky static and it also showed the message.

I again VPN'd into another work network that use Elite with the old true statics but on an RT connection and it did not have the message.

So I see that all my Elite speed connections work fine while the Pro speed packages get the message.

Yeah, I get mixed results....some tests detect compression which I'm not running and others dont detect.

I wonder if it considers the PPPox header as compression?

I'm on PPPoE and just ran 2 tests to Ft. Worth. Neither gave that error message. (However, both results were garbage.)

Nothing to do with PPPoE, I don't think. I'm on a true static, bridged (not sticky) IP, and I got that error message too, though it happened only once out of the 10 or 12 times I ran the tests over the past two nights.

the answer to the question is in the way the routing is performed by the equipment that you are going through to get to your destination on the dslreports side. What happens at certain points is a bottleneck occurs that interferes with the test at the time you are running it and you are being routed through different routers that may or may not be configured properly. I am a systems engineer and know how to recreate this using cisco routers in a large network and it is usually when you are using protocols or configurations that are stricter than need to be required. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do besides report it to your ISP and they may actually check out the routes you are being routed to. I reported it on several occasions to TWC and they occasionally fix it but since the revelation of Outsourcing most engineers like myself no longer have control over the quality of electronic life. So until everyone wakes up and smells the coffee and bring jobs back to the good old US of A, I would suggest you keep on fighting to get the best in digital crack so that us poor humble engineers that keep the porn flowing can get our jobs back. Oh and please don't forget the guy or gal behind the fast food counter. They need the lovin too you know. I know since I had to flip burgers till I got another job somewhere doing something completely different.

I would be very interested to know more what you know about the Cisco networks. I am having an issue with my ISP of packet loss. I saw their setup today they have two fiber demarcs in the closet and two cisco switches. I get random packet loss and also see the message during speedtest. I have different drops in different rooms and they all have the same problems at the same time.
