Yes, that's correct. The ones that are really designed for portable use (things like McAfee stinger, Avast! cleaner, e.t.c.) should even work on read-only volumes (eg a write-protected jumpdrive or CD-ROM).

Things like the KAV trial, Avast! 4 Home, or Adaware must be installed. I generally end up doing this on computers that have absolutely no protection, and tell the client to make certain that they register, or malware will probably re-infest their computer. Previously Adware SE used to run for me, but I couldn't figure this latest one out even after some fiddling. All that's on there of Adaware is the installer executable.

Well, assuming you're on a USB drive that you can write to, yes. Spybot you can run updates on and those should carry with you on the drive.
