| Just Got Comcast Cable HSI; Consensus on Their McAfee Suite Today, I just about finished installation of Comcast Cable HSI after a year of frustration with Earthlink DSL (long story for another place and time). Aside from all the rebates they included in the offer for which I signed up, the package includes what appears to be a fairly complete free version of McAfee's Security Suite. This month's Consumer Reports gives it a fairly good review, but as one who has always picked out highly thought of individual security programs, I'm a bit wary of a one size does it all. I'd be interested in thoughts, cavets and experiences with this product. I still plan on keeping some of the better "freebies", such as AdAware SE available as a double check, which is something I got convinced to do a couple of years ago.
While not a major pressing issue, i do appreciate any thoughts on this.

| Re: Just Got Comcast Cable HSI; Consensus on Their McAfee Suite McAfee,especially free, is a decent security package. But it is still bloatware as far as I am concerned. And it is the 1st thing I removed when I got my new PC several weeks ago.
I go the individual route like you. I think that is still the best choice for experienced users. Though a pkg like McAfee is fine for a non-techie who just wants everything to run automatically and never have to think about it again.

What is the feeling towards Kaspersky's Suite and Trend Micro's Suite, overall and as compared to McAfee's offering. Also, free AVG vs free Avira anti-virus programs; I read good things about each and have tried AVG but not Avira.
I was using Comodo's firewall before going to Comcast and found it more than satisfactory, though training it was a bit tedious. Speaking of which, I am concerned that McAfee's firewall has only shown maybe a half dozen training pop-ups, which may or may not be a good thing.
Hopefully, others in my situation will benefit from the advice from you more "seasoned" and knowledgeable folk.

And NO, I am not promoting my thread, I am just trying to inform, warn, and show you that anything Kaspersky is NOT a wise and pragmatic choice. I am now using Avast and I love it!
As for McAfee, although I don't have the same attitude about them versus Kaspersky, I used them in the past; Detection was actually quite good, however, again, the cure was worst than the disease...

| I recently set it up on my dad's new vista laptop. Seems to be nice for his use.
It even cleans up tracking cookies and can be scheduled to clean up temp files ect. It can also update virus defs and run scheduled scans via the limited user account he uses too. | |

1 edit | retiredcop96.....I'm a long time Comcast customer, and I just installed the free McAfee suite the other day out of curiosity. It's not that bad. It doesn't bog my PC down. It has pretty good detection rates. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to continue using it though. I just don't like the way it is set up. Too many clicks to get where you want to go within the GUI. For someone who doesn't want to bother with their firewall or AV, it's not a bad choice. | |
