IE on windows mobile - disable???

I have a weird question, one which may or may not have a good answer.

Is there any way to disable/restrict IE on a windows mobile device - specifically a Symbol Scanner??? We have a few newer models which run WM5 and IE is integrated. Some enterprising users have figured out that they can surf on their scanners, which is not a well liked idea by higher ups...

I can't find any way to remove IE, to lock it down, to disable it, to do ANYTHING to it really...

Did find a registry editor, and was able to set a blank homepage, but that doesn't do much good...

Any ideas?

You might look at Spb Kiosk. It may do what you want...

Good recommendation, and a terrific company, too. I've used a couple of their other products. Might be the most customer-driven software shop I've ever seen.

Are these managed? Because the ones I've deployed (at major retailers) you run a "quick deployment," scan 6 barcodes and the device reboots, does some magic and IE is never to be seen again.

"Are these managed?"

Not sure. All I do with them is re-image the software if something goes wrong. We have custom programmed software which I load, but it doesn't do much else to them. IE is nowhere on the older model (9060's) but the new one's (9090's) have it. I can delete shortcuts, but can't see anywhere to remove/disable the darn thing.

Perhaps the programmers have some tricks up their sleeves...

SoonerAl, thanks for the link, but I don't think that's quite what I need... I want to restrict IE to be pretty much unusable, and I don't think I could convince anyone to spend that kind of money.

Did you see these from the Explorer Builder function?

Of course, as you noted, cost may be the deciding factor...

No, I didn't, but the cost is definitely a bit prohibitive for what I'd like to accomplish... Still looks like cool software that would have some really good uses, just not quite what I'm after...

Is there any way to simply "lock down" "disable" or "remove" IE from the Windows Mobile 5 platform without resorting to a 3rd party app. like that??? Surely there's a way, and if I have to get our programmers to look into it, I will, but I just thought I'd ask around here first since I'd rather not trouble them with this...

Just delete the shortcut for starters?

It's at \Windows\Start Menu\Internet Explorer.lnk

Might have to look @ the properties and untick "System" and/or "Read-Only" if you wish to delete it.

I don't know if its safe to actually remove the IE executable but you can that too.

It will revert to default if they do a hard reset, but you'd probably notice that. Besides that I can't really help, I've never used those models only some other model and they were bundled with IBM POS systems, all you had to do was scan 6 barcodes it would configure the network download the software lock itself down and reboot.

"Just delete the shortcut for starters?"

..they need a bigger smiley face here...

Actually, I've done that; deleted the shortcut in all locations, but here's the kicker. Somehow, on this one I'm working on, the backspace key opens IE. Yeah, somehow, I don't know if it's a default (don't know how you'd change it either), this scanner (possibly other MC9090's) will open up IE if you hit backspace key while on the desktop!

If I could just restrict it such that it wouldn't surf, that'd be awesome. No biggie if the program is there, as long as it's locked from browsing.
Not sure if we have any programming barcodes for these, I guess I'll bug the programmers about that too... Surely, if they could figure out how to remove IE from the older models, these aren't TOO different...
