| Networking/Fiber
I live in Lincoln, just moved here, and have fiber. I have some questions about networking. I have 3-4 PCs that need to be connected - upstairs and downstairs.
The surewest techs that have been here say that i can hook up the router upstairs (where they say the feed from the box is) and plug one port into the wall to feed the rest of the house - but I dont buy it. You cant put multiple PCs on one router port (right?). The way I was going to do it is put the router in the media panel in the master bdrm and rewire the jacks in the rooms. So each network jack goes from room to router. With the feed being at the router in the panel. This works great I've done it before.
But the techs keep saying I don't need to do that. The problem is I personally have never gotten to talk to the tech. This is all 3rd party info from my father-in-law, who cant remember shit and doesnt understand what the guy was saying. I can't (wont) call tech support as A) they wont have the slightest idea whats going on, and B) the hold times are ridiculous.
I figure someone else here has done the same thing before and knows whats going on. Anyone? |

| yea you cant have more then one PC per ethernet port
each wall jack needs its own port with more then 2 PCs i would realy look in to get an older PC like an old P2- P3 with 256MB of ram and running linux or get nice router like the WRT54GL and using DD-WRT on it
then run from that to a nice 10 or 20 port switch depending on how many rooms you want to wire up id just do them all and leave the setup with the home if you ever sell it adds a bit to your home value if you do it right
if you dont want to do it your self you can get a professional installer do it for you and install a patch panel as well

| reply to KrakHT Yeah I have a WRT54G - running DD-WRT already.
I figured it would probably be best to do it that way. I can do the patch panel myself not a problem at all. Just was hoping to hear from someone in the area with a similar setup to see what they said. I'd really like to know what the hell the tech was talking about, and my father in law wont shutup about it... |
