Modem replacement suggestions

Im looking to replace my 2wire (1701HG) modem/wireless router with a simple modem and a seperate wireless router.

The wireless router is an easy task. Im just not real sure what my best bet would be for a straight forward modem for AT&T dsl.

Ive looked at ebay for dsl modems, but there are so many and im not so sure they all work with this service.

Being in Milford, where there's lots of Uverse, know anyone that had DSL and now has Uverse? They now have a spare modem..

Interesting. First ive heard of this service. And no, dont know anyone using it that had dsl.

I was hoping to just pick one (modem) off ebay at a good fair price.

Any modem you might suggest?

I got a replacement one at Circuit City. There is really not much choice, Speedstream 4100.

There's a thread by Mountaineer (name isn't spelled right). He lays out how to set it up. There's a couple ways. If you search on 4100 and setup, it will come to the surface. It should be a FAQ item, but I don't know if it made it there.

So, basicly i have two choices for a modem? I looked on CC and didnt see any modems for DSL.

Im not real concerned with the setup. They are all basicly the same

My buddy has the SS5100 and doesnt have any of the problems i have, so maybe ill just go with that. But, whats with the "b" on the end of the suggested 5100?

Buy a 4100b from the AT&T on line store for $49: »store.att.com/Catalog/ProductDet···d=catMRG

AFAIK, Best Buy is still selling old stock 4100s. The 4100b is fully ADSL2+ compliant. The 4100 and 5100b weren't due to use of the older 01.01.00.00 DataPump version which is basically the low-level firmware that drives the chips set.

Extensive testing on my line and by others here at DSLR has shown that 4100b will give a lower attenuation (1.0 to 2.0 dB) and higher noise margins (1.5 to 3.0 dB) than either the 4100 or 5100b. It also has increased noise immunity in certain situations.
