i agree.. cable co's have plenty of bandwidth to play with...

example, a few weeks ago, we were only using almost half of our bandwidth on an OC3, and we just upgraded to an OC12 and im sure we're always last to do upgrades around here lol

Just read the apocalypses melt down . I didnt make this this up .
Cable TV operators trying to satisfy the increasing bandwidth demands of HDTV customers feel very much like the thrifty grocer who tried to cram ten pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag," says vice president and research director Stan Schatt. "The increasing bandwidth demands on cable operators will soon reach crisis stage, yet this is a 'dirty little industry secret' that no one talks about.

The "bandwidth" problem cableco's have is not internet data, it's broadcast spectrum for HDTV channels. They have very little to do with each other. The vast majority of cablecos are still running on DOCSIS 1.1, which means the internet portion is only taking up a couple of channels.

It's a good opinion piece. However, the guy is no where near correct.

Anytime people add the word/statement "... will soon reach crisis stage".. then it sounds like they have something to want out of the so-called crisis.

If cable were to migrate to more of an IP based system instead of fixed channel to frequency, or switch to SDV, and other reclamation techniques, there is PLENTY of "bandwidth" available.

Look at what U-verse is doing over twisted pair.. now, take coax/fiber systems and repeat.. what do you have? Not a crisis.. Long before I heard of Telco talking about IPTV, Comcast suits were talking about it in company meetings.. this was back in 1999 when they were talking about the direction where they were heading.

An old saying is "there's a doomsdayer in every crowd."
