Skype claims system returning; some users now working

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070817/ap_···e_outage
Users of Skype in Asia and parts of Europe were able to log on and use the free phone service Friday, nearly 24 hours after a software bug hit the popular program.

The company, a division of online auction company eBay Inc., said that while some of its estimated 220 million users had reported successfully connecting, others still were unable to do so.

"We're on the road to recovery," the company said on its Heartbeat blog Friday morning. "Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continue throughout the day. An encouraging number of users can now use Skype once again. We know were not out of the woods yet, but we are in better shape now than we were yesterday."
A worldwide outage shows that Skype does not have the support staff it needs for such a large # of customers. And it also shows that their "Change Management" systems are inadequate. Under no circumstances should a change to software result in a worldwide outage.

Believe what you want, I'll believe what I want! This is a rock solid service that costs little or nothing. If people are crying that its ruining their business because they can't call then they are too stupid to be in business. You've got to have some kind of fallback because nothing, nothing, nothing is 100%.

In a statement posted on its website, Skype said the widespread outage began after Skype's servers around the world were re-started following a software upgrade.
