Unlocking your phone has nothing to do with ease of use or signal strength. All it allows you to do is use another providers sim card.

First thing I did on my SE W810i from Cingular was to unlock it- easier to use and got better signal strength too. The carriers all install their BS firmware that doesn't work as well as the original.
