what happens wen skype connects

Since I was under the impression that skype was p2p based, except for services such as skype out/in, I'm wondering what happens when skype connects to the network?
I thought users themselves helped to relay calls and the like in such a way where this kind of outage couldn't happen?
Has anybody even done a packet capture of them connecting to the skype network with their skype client to see what or where it connects to? I thought skype worked a bit like KazAA in that users on high speed uplinks would have supernode abilities, relaying file transfers, phone calls, and skype chats, where direct connections couldn't be made? Is this not how skype works?
