U-verse in chicago? ETA?

has anyone heard an ETA on when U-verse will be in chicago (and/or where in chicago specifically?)... i know there is a u-verse forum but i didn't find much of use there as far as specific dates.

i've seen them heavily promoting the service in the chicago area.. i've even seen bus ads. so it can't be far off...

does anyone know.. when u-verse is available, will i be able to get high speed internet through the u-verse service vs through their DSL line? my dsl line through them really really sucks. their web site is very vague, you wouldn't even know it's a fiber type connection by looking at their web site. i can't say that i'll be that interested in getting TV through them since it won't allow more than one HD stream at a time, but i'm curious about the Internet aspect.

No idea when it's coming to Chicago and I am surprised it hasn't hit Chicago yet. It should be faster than your current connection, although the speeds (6k down/1k up) currently offered are kind of weak compared to what Verizon or Comcast offers. I'm not sure how much speed is capable or will be offered in the future, but AT&T has mentioned they will increase speeds by the end of the year... but I reckon that will depend on area and competition.

My understanding is it is fiber to the curb/node (which IMO is a half-assed implementation), and NOT to the home. Correct me if I'm wrong, but essentially it's like having the central office moved close to 3000 feet from your home and from there your phone line is still used to deliver content.

I think the best way to describe U-Verse would be IPTV with DSL on the side. I know I would like to see faster speeds offered on par with FIOS or Comcast, just without Comcast's shady policies.

6k down/1k up man that's Dialup speeds. I'm sure you meant 6Mbps/1Mbps.

Personally I would just love to dump Comcast and have everything on one bill. I would also love to not have to pay for substandard service that I am receiving from Comcast.

There have been a number of threads on this topic, including one started by me about a year ago.

If you live in the city, or in a not brand-new subdivision don't hold your breath. In spite of all the talk it doesn't look as if it is showing up here in the city any time soon.

AT&T seems to be living in a strange world where only new construction in very affluent areas gets it.

I mean, they have 17 million DSL subscribers and just celebrated their 100,000th U-verse subscriber. That's a glacial rollout.

In spite of their much trumpeted FTTN (as opposed to the FTTH infrastructure that FIOS uses) strategy, it doesn't appear as if the situation will change any tine soon.

I've had it with Comcrap too, but in my area, as far as TV is concerned, they are the only cable outfit available, no WOW or RCN in this neck of the woods.

So we wait...

are you anticipating that expansion to actually take place? (where?)...

i'm not aware that they've done any expansion really since the bought out 21st century and took them downhill years ago... (they certainly haven't expanded any bit westward of the red line, where their home base has always been)

I already apply to be on their list when their in my area but as far as I know, there is Fiber Optic in Chicago by RCN. I just don't know where =/..., I wish I knew where the heck their C/O is located at! I asked if they have any bandwidth regulation and it seems to be unlimited bandwidth which makes me want it even more but before I get over my head I would really consider reading the TOS.

Does this help?

Not sure what a "Network Meet Point" is though

i wouldn't count that as an expansion really... their network has looked relatively close to that for... years. their fiber runs are along the red line, then branch out from there to serve their own interests (they used to have a few data centers--most of those addresses are old data centers, they have cable modem hookups needing connectivity etc)
