FiOS Internet rate hike for 10/1/07 (VA)

It looks like some customers without a contract will see a $5/mo rate hike come October 1 in Virginia.

Hopefully, the hike(s) will coincide with increased speeds.

Edit: I'm told there will be no change in pricing on the 5/2 and 10/2 plans.

Do you have a link or something you can post so we can all be on the "lookout" for this in our own individual areas?

Thanks for this.

Verizon is sending the notice by mail. If your rates are going up October 1, you should get a letter in the next several days.

Ok thanks. Our rates went up as of January 1st so let's see what happens here. They do charge different prices by geographic market and competition.

I just got that letter too, 54.95 to 59.95. Is the increase only for non-contract customers? I am wondering if I can avoid the increase if I extend my contract another year. I was on a 1 year deal (30/5 for 54.95).

Re: FiOS Internet rate hike for 10/1/07 (VA)

That's almost a 10% increase, which is frustrating to me. I also received the letter, but my one year contract is not up until the end of October.

Those are usually arbitrary numbers and have nothing to do with the increased costs of delivering service, better performance or more robust features. Just a nice round number to gouge the customer with that they would not be able to support if we could force them to do so.

We were all wondering what would happen with increases once they sunk their teeth in.. I guess now we will find out.

Interesting that they reference »Consumer Reports: FiOS on Top! on their letter.

My year was up in April, and I just got "the letter" stating the price increase is coming in October.

Time to rethink my needs... $60 a month....hmmmmm
There is no mention if a "contract" is even available.

Did anyone take a look at the back of the letter?
There is a little blurb:

"Verizon reminds you to download legally"

Is OOL currently available in your area? I think if they continue to raise the rates that quickly, people will think twice about the difference. What was the rate breakdown?

10 X 2 = 49.99
20 X 5 = 59.99

I started out at 29.99 for 10 X 2 and then when my year was up, switched to 20 X 5 for 49.99 but every month I get billed a different amount...

Re: FiOS Internet rate hike for 10/1/07 (VA)

ok im confused. I'm on a contract and still received the letter so it appears that all contract customers will be charged for the increase come october.

Yet i can still sign up today for the service via the web site for a years contract at 54.95.... the month to month pricing is still 59.95.

And when i got hooked for tv i ended up renewing my contract since i attempted to go to dhcp...they charged be 20$ fee which implies at least to me that we renegotiated the contract at that time. (course this months bill didnt even include tv charges so we are paying for it anyways in hopes that next months bill may inf act actually arrive correct finally..)

I find this a bit irritating....i do so hope verizon doesnt become the land of ever increasing prices like its competition....

Note the letter says the change will take effect "no sooner than October 1, 2007."

If you are under contract until December 1, you shouldn't see the price increase until then. I'm still waiting on confirmation on that from someone at FiOS.

I would argue any price increase if I am on a contract. After all, what good is the contact if one side of the party to the contract can do anything outside the boundaries of th agreement?

Hmmmm.
I'm going to have to seriously reconsider Cable-Vision's triple play offer: 30 bucks-a-month each, internet phone AND tv, for a year.
I have been extremely pleased with my FiOS internet connection and phone service, but I'm really going to have to listen to my wallet.
Right now I'm paying about $90 a month for IO digital tv, and another $109 for Verizon phone and internet.
Verizon isn't about to lower their price and put almost a grand in my pocket.
The math talks.

What is wacky is that these increases came out of the blue. If Cablevision is smart, they will keep their pricing just below Verizon and they will lose less and retain more customers. I don't blame you at those rates.
I wonder what will happen to the price war? If Verizon keeps escalating, they might lose the war before they thought they were going to win it.

It ain't just virginia... I'm in NY and I got my rate increase notice yesterday... $5 more /month for the 30/5 service so for me that goes from $55/mo to $60/mo.

I don't think 30/5 service is available in NY anymore. Old customers with that package still have it, but new customers must choose between 10/2, 20/5, and 50/5.

Re: FiOS Internet rate hike for 10/1/07 (VA)

I was one of the first FiOS customers in NY... I originally had 15/2 for $45/mo back in April 2005. At that time, they offered the 30/5 for the whopping 199/mo., but that was too expensive for me. Just a few months later, they mysteriously dropped the price of the 30/5 service to $55 a month and I jumped on it (probably to compete with OOL). I think they are making a mistake raising the price already. I'll have to see what the OOL packages are like at the moment.

I am almost 1 month into my 1 year contract (brand new subscriber) and received the rate increase letter... 50/5 being increased from $89.99 to $94.99. I have to go re-read my service contract about rate increases but shouldn't my charges remain the same for the duration of my 12 month contract? It is a little rude raising my rates so soon... I can't remember the last time Cablevision raised my Internet price in 3.5 years of service.

I can scan it when I get home later... my question: can I expect rate hikes whenever Verizon wants to during my 1 year contract? I am so angry at the change less than a month into my new service that I would like to cancel my FIOS and go back to Cablevision. Plus, I liked their DVRs better...

Heading out of town this afternoon, so if anyone can post it sooner rather than later, I'll make note of this on our front page. I've also fired off an inquiry to Verizon for clarification.

So then the letter doesn't really specify whether this is for contract or non-contract pricing?

Re: FiOS Internet rate hike for 10/1/07 (VA)

Karl,

I just confirmed with Verizon that my rate will remain the same throughout the 1 year contract and to disregard the letter. The letter was not generic and was addressed to me and my specific address...

"News about an upcoming rate change for your Verizon FIOS Internet service

We're writing to let you know that your Verizon FIOS Internet monthly rate is scheduled to change to $94.95 no sooner than October 1, 2007. You will see this change in the next one to two billing cycles."

I am paying $89.95 right now according to my 1 year contract... If Verizon were to violate my 1 year contract like that, I would immediately cancel and return to Cablevision... who will pay for my early termination fee that Verizon will assess. I personally feel it is very short-sited to charge me $5 extra per month and lose a new customer who is happy spending $200+ for Internet, TV and voice service.

Are you currently in a contract "period" or did your last 1 or 2 year contract already expire? Just curious as the Verizon rep I just spoke to said they cannot change your rates in the middle of a contract term.

I was told that the $5 price increase would only apply to customers whose contract had expired. If you are out of contract, you'll be hit with the increase in October. If your contract expires in December, you'd be hit with the rate increase then.

The rate increase is only on the 30/5 and 50/5 packages.

Based on reports so far:

VA 30/5: $54.95 -> $59.95
NY 30/5: $54.95 -> $59.95
NY 50/5: $89.95 -> $94.95

30/5 plan price increase
I really hated doing this, but I wound up calling Cablevision sales.
Here's what they offered me, and I took: (as a "defecting" FiOS customer)
$14.95 a month each, for 15/2 OOL internet and OptimumVoice, for a year, and a discount on my existing TV package.
I was able to cut my monthly TV, phone and Internet access costs by $85.00/mo. for the next twelve months.
Not too shabby.

Well if this is true, Verizon is not being wise in their marketing approach. This letter from Chris the marketing person can stand to do more DAMAGE than good if this is going out wily-nilly to

1. people who just signed up without a contract;
2. to people who DO have a contract.
I hope this gets communicated by Karl to the Verizon people up top.
I have had FiOS for a year now and I get constantly barraged with offer to sign up, offers for this and that. Someone needs to reign in the marketing database and show some market intelligence here.
Well, things have not changed since I was there (of course I would never have done something like that.....lol )

Depends on your market. VA gets better prices because of location.

I live in Northern VA and I've been paying $54.95/month (30/5) for about 10 months now. We've been thinking about moving and I was curious if my rate would increase so I called and was told that the $179.95/month is for 30/5 in Maryland and 30/5 in VA is still $54.95/month. FWIW, the rep that I spoke to hinted that there was a "small" price increase coming "soon". A few days later, I got the "price is going up $5/month" letter.

I think close to 10% is not really a small price increase.

I'm getting hooked up with the 30/5 plan on monday. All the lower plans had two year contracts but the 30/5 plan only had a 1 year term. I'm really wishing now that it had a two year term.

Martin believes, for example, that the FCC aided the cause of broadband deployment when it decided to not require line sharing on the telcos' new fiber optic buildouts.

"Several people objected to that and said it was going to lead to higher broadband prices," he said -- noting that his predecessor, Michael Powell, was among the naysayers. "We've seen just the opposite happen. Broadband prices have gone down because the real competition is between DSL and cable services."

this is from June 2006; will Martin retract his statement when the verizon increases become official?

Rate increase letter received 9/17/07

I received a notice about a rate increase to 52.99 no sooner than October 6, 2007. I currently pay 39.95 for the lowest speed option (5/2 or whatever it is now). Customer Service confirmed that the 52.99 rate is correct because I do not have a verizon land line telephone. I have fios internet, fios tv, and verizon voicewing VOIP service. I guess that just isn't enough for them.

Forgive me for not finding the other 9 threads. This is the one I found on google and it mentioned nothing of signing up for 12 months to avoid the increase. Unfortunately the customer service guy also didn't mention this as an option. I will have to call back now that I have seen your post and other posts in other threads to see if that works for me.

Yeah,
The Verizon reps are not always up on the latest "offers".
Unfortunately you/we all need to challenge them and push them for the best rates.

daybreaker01

@verizon.net

I just got my letter yesterday. I'm in CA and my rate is set to go up to $62.99 from $49.99! If it were only 10% like some of the posts indicate here it wouldn't be that bad. But 26%? Totally uncalled for.

I'm calling the FIOS reps now to see what they can do. If they don't cooperate I'll have to reconsider cable again.

Sad thing is Verizon came in our town like gangbusters with the deals and now that they are making a presence they are starting to stick the screws to the customers. Not wise, in my opinion. Especially when they do it to those early adopters, like myself, who signed up blind without really knowing what they had to offer. We get screwed while the new signups get all the breaks. Poor marketing.

Benzima

@verizon.net

I'm in California too. Just got the letter yesterday. Rate change from $49.95 to $62.99. The big 26% increase!!! Once again we seem to pay more than everyone else. I'm fuming but, I know the same thing Verizon knows. I'm pretty sure taking to some CSR aint gonna do anything so I can take it or leave it. Time to re-examine my needs and check out other options.

Funny thing was, looking at the broader market and falling prices, I actually was hoping for a price decrease or performance increase. My first guess is there isn't much competetion, so Verizon decided to see what 'the market will bare', but still...26% increase?!!!
