Get out of a Cell Phone contract

»consumerist.com/consumer/cellpho···lations/

1. Sell your cellphone contract.

2. Complain that service isn't up to par, file complaints with PUC, FTC, BBB, AG and cc them to the company.

3. Wait for the company to change its rates (like text-messaging), then call to cancel based on the material change of contract. These are usually for the default rates and you won't be able to cancel if you have a package that takes care of it... hint: so get rid of the package and call back

4. Move to an area outside the plan's coverage area.

5. Join the armed forces - you'll need to fax in a copy of your orders.

6. Die - someone will need to fax in your death certificate on your behalf. You'll be dead, but at least you're in heaven.

Didn't people try that when Cingular did this and Cingular simply said no.

When I called Cingular up for this, the first level guy couldn't help and transferred me immediately to his supervisor. After arguing with her for about half an hour and she realizing I was not going to give up transferred me to a manager who said that I'd be getting a call back tomorrow since she was already there past closing time talking to me (incredibly nice lady though, not like the supervisor who was yelling over the phone).

So tomorrow comes and I'm at school continuing my law studies. I get back home and check the home phone, there's a message from Cingular's legal department [Whoa! They called back! (Why didn't the call my cell phone?)]. Basically I'm told that they'll cancel 2 of my 4 lines, which is fine by me since the other 2 are up in a month's time. I also requested a copy of the contract and they, in no uncertain terms, said that they couldn't provide me a with a copy of it.

You live, you learn. It's really pathetic that I had to make legal threats for them to uphold the contract. I am kind of proud though that I was able to get a call back.

Okay, they fed you a load of crap... The have to provide you with a copy of the contract when you request one for the simple reason that it is impossible to fulfill your end of the contract without knowing what you have to do. Additionally, you have to know what your rights under the contract are.

I know you're right, but I decided to cut my losses. I got what I went for and that took 2 hours. Imagine how much more time it would take to get the contract. It was actually their legal department that said it too, in the voicemail that was left.

Honestly, I swear that they hire the most ignorant people. But that's another topic.

*Heaven- I believe some cell phone companies actually claim to have coverage there now, or at least a roaming agreement.

Even it death, you are still SOL.

Why do you think so many Wireless Companies are trying to put up their towers in Cemeteries???

The 'Can You Hear Me Now???' guy carries around a Verizon issued HALO for when he is checking the coverage there,
you know that guy is really DEAD right, all that RF to the brain 24/7/365 for years now, and not paying attention to where he is walking, he must have been hit by DOZENS of cars.

WOW! That is nice for your side. That means an automatic WIN to you. If they can't won't provide a copy of the contract you signed and you want to quit... Then then they have to let you go, and they can not legally charge you a penalty. Look to the U.C.C.
