1. Break the ToS (typically excessive roaming, or obscene data usage/tethering)
2. Move to an area that they don't provide service (extreme)
3. Why use a contract... go prepaid and avoid it... or once your contract expires, stay month to month.
I do agree that wireless comapanies are near the bottom of the food chain (according to the article), however, I think the airlines are much worse. FedEx'ing myself it preferable to the airlines these days.
