MgKnight : Greetings from your humble and ashamed knight. Yet again I have broken my word and not returned for far too long. Please accept my apology.

The absolute latest and up to date news is that shortly after noon today I will once again go under the surgeon's knife, and this time also his saw. Radiation necrosis has claimed my right mandible and it must be removed. As far as I know the surgery will take some six to eight hours. I will be in the hospital for six to seven days. That will be followed by six to eight weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatments, three times daily, but fortunately right here at home.

Just as soon as I am able, I will communicate my status via our fearless leader, my princess, lilhurricane . Again, thank you one and all for your unabated support. It is appreciated far more than you will ever imagine.

There IS a cure out there to be found. It is just waiting for us.

MgKnight : Once again I have been gone far too long. Please accept my apology. Although there are a few reasons, there is no acceptable excuse for this.

Time and again I have made reference to all of you being a part of my family. Family is where one turns to in times of need. For the past three plus years you have been there for me, without my even asking. Again I will humbly say thank you for that. I am still here today because of you being there for me, sending your Mojo, hugs, love and reassurance.

Many of you have told me that you think I am the most positive thinking person you know. Well, it is time to reveal that I too am not invincible. No, I am not Superman, though he also had a problem with kryptonite.

Nothing more than pure vanity kept me from coming here and sharing with you what was happening and asking for a bit more Mojo. At one time or another, vanity keeps us from doing the right thing. During my most recent hiatus my shell was cracked.

The pain, frustration and despair just plain become too much for me to handle. I became overwhelmed. I lost it, all hope. Depression not only moved in, but completely took over. After a couple weeks of far too negative and irrational thinking, yes even about taking the "easy way out" by using the stash of medications that I have, I finally convinced myself it was time to get some help.

I saw one of my physicians and asked him to have me admitted for a week of rehab. That was all I thought I would need to get my head back on straight, one week. WRONG! Thirty days later I was released from therapy. I was Bill once again. The dark clouds had vanished and the sky was once again blue and filled with sunshine, back to my world. No more thoughts of wanting to join my brother who nearly ten years ago lost his life to this insidious disease.

That said, it is time to move on, again putting one foot in front of the other on the long and winding road to being "cured."

I am current having hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments as preparation for oral surgery. I have an abscessed tooth that needs to be pulled and a nasty case of radiation necrosis in my jaw. The entire left quadrant is exposed bone as the gum tissue has been destroyed. Surgery to hopefully resolve this situation is scheduled for December 5th. Following the surgery I will have to have more hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments to assist the healing process.

Sometime in late January I will be having surgery on my left shoulder. During my near total glossectomy surgery the accessory nerve to the left trapezious muscle became "collateral damage", which caused the muscle to degenerate and disappear. Without the trapezious muscle the entire shoulder girdle has fallen, leaving several places where bone is gnashing on bone, producing much pain. The procedure that will be done will relocate three muscles in my upper back to bring the shoulder back into place. The surgery will require four to six days in the hospital, followed by eight to ten weeks with the shoulder and arm in a brace to immobilize it. Following that I will begin physical therapy to train the muscles to do their new functions. I am guessing that will likely be the worst part of this as far as pain is concerned, but, hopefully once it is done the pain will disappear.

So, there is where I have been, I am currently, and where I am headed in the near future. Also, I will definitely be around here much more often than I have been for the past couple years. Family is what it is all about. Family is power to overcome adversity.

MgKnight : Greetings yet again my friends. It has been once again far too long since my last update. For that I sincerely apologize. For those who may have been wondering if perhaps I had expired, this obviously will belay those thoughts.

It is now just a couple weeks past three years since my initial diagnosis, and I am still here. :) Every one I have talked with thus far has told me that it gets better as time passes. The only thing missing is how much time.

The good news:

As of my last CT scan, back the first part of June, my neck, throat and lymph nodes are cancer cell free. So far, I have beat this scourge to mankind. I continue the battle daily.

The not so good news:

I still get exhausted every day. Naps have become a way of life for me. Unfortunately, those naps lead to sleepless nights. Even sleeping pills fail to help. It is one very vicious cycle. Though few and far in between, there are times I wish someone would stop the world and let me off. Yes, as you suspect, those times can only be attributed to depression. I am taking medication for that also. For the most part it is helping as it should.

Speaking of medications, I am now back on the potassium citrate that I was taking up until my surgery for my kidney stone problem. In the past two months I have given birth to two new stones, one about six millimeters and the other close to nine. A CT scan reveals that I still have five more incubating. One of those is far too large to pass and thus I will be going to the hospital some time next month to have it pulverized with lithotripsy. If my memory is correct, that will be my seventh time to have this procedure. Oh the joy!!

The potentially bad news:

I have developed three spots on my lungs, and another one on my liver. Nothing is being done presently about them except to watch them very closely. Until a doctor tells me that they are tumors, they are not.

Other news:

I am really enjoying my new home in Massachusetts. I am officially retired and have filed for social security. I spend most of my days being caretaker for my mother in law who is on the road with dementia. Some days are good and others are bad. Also, a couple of weeks ago we had to put my mom in a nursing home for advanced stages of this same wicked disease. Fortunately she has taken it well, probably much better than we have.

My daughter, son in law and two grandsons will be arriving this Sunday to visit with us for a week. You cannot imagine the joy and excitement I have in looking forward to their arrival. I have not seen them for about three years, I think.... The card that my daughter sent me for fathers' day said, "Fathers give the best bear hugs." She wrote inside of the card, "I cannot wait to get one from you!" I cannot wait to give her one, or maybe a hundred or so.

That is about it for now, except to say once again thank you one and all for your thoughts, prayers and Mojo. If ever there was proof that it works, it is me.

MgKnight : Well my friends, we are quickly approaching one year from my surgery, and I am still here, thanks to all of you.

Unlike the first battle when a scan was done three months following treatment I have yet to have one to check the score between me and the beast. My first post treatment scan will be done next Tuesday afternoon. I do not look forward to good news, I expect it. My visual exam was done the day before yesterday and I was informed that "everything looks good." Unfortunately the beast did not reside on the surface so that report was totally expected.

It may be several weeks before I know any results as my followup appointment with my doc is not scheduled until the end of February. I trust that she would contact me sooner if there were reason to, but I do not expect to here any news until I see her in February.

I cannot thank you all enough for your continued support. It is what has kept me going, and here. You will know just as soon as I know. Expect good news.

Although I have suffered a few minor setbacks, which resulted in the onset of some additional pain, the new year finds me well. One very major plus is that the years of accumulated body fat that I had/have are disappearing, and are slowly being replaced with body mass, muscle. My body has found a weight that it apparently is now comfortable with. I have traveled the gauntlet from a high of 226 pounds and a 44 inch waist down to a low of 125 pounds, to rebound to 150 and a 32 inch waist. I am extremely pleased with this!!

Most of you already know that I lost my dad a few weeks ago after a very long illness. His passing, though sad, was a blessing to all of us. He is now finally at peace and free of pain.

Last week my mom had a severe mid-brain stroke. She was in a coma when she arrived at the hospital and after many tests and exams done by the ER docs and neurologists we were informed that there was little if any hope for her. Our decision was to make no decision that day, but rather to wait for a day to talk amongst ourselves regarding further treatment. Her wish was for no life support systems to be used on her.

Upon arriving in her room the following morning my sister said good morning to her from the side of her bed. Mom opened her eyes and moved her fingers as if to say hello. My sister then asked her how she was and she responded, "I'm just fine." I nearly passed out from the joy of once again hearing her voice.

I had been cheated in life by not being with her and having her love as I grew up, and I feared that death would cheat me of that again. As you all know, I have only been back here in Massachusetts for a year. During the past year I have been blessed by having spent a lot of time with her. I had been enveloped with her love and she shared much about the past with me, many thing I had never knew. Thanks to what I can only accept as a miracle I will be able to continue with the new and fantastic relationship I have found with her. I say miracle because one of her doctors said to me that he has seen things in her turn around that he has never seen before. He told me that he had honestly given up hope for her.

During the past week she has progressed from the ICU to where she was transferred to the rehabilitating unit today. There does not seem to be any apparent damage done to her speech or physical movements and she has been out of bed walking about on her own.

Though 2007 ended with far too much emotional stress, 2008 has begun with just the opposite. I look forward to a year of much joy in my life. I wish the same for each and every one of you. As I said perhaps several hundred times during that first night, just keep thinking positive! None of us know what tomorrow will bring, and fortunately doctors are not always right.

We have work to do. There are cures to find. They are out there waiting for us to find them. Perhaps one will be found tomorrow. It could happen.

MgKnight : Yes my dear dear friends, I still breath. Life here in the land of the tundra, or so it seems to my freezing butt, continues as does my recovery. It is long and slow but thus far there have been only minor setbacks.

I have said it before, I'll say it again, and attempt to keep my word this time. I will be around more frequently from now on. It may be at really strange hours as sleep is something that only occurs when it wishes to.

Again, thank you one and all for your steadfast support. It still carries me from day to day. I love you all.

It is so wonderful to read this update.

Perhaps you do recall that I once told you a personal story which you described as being 'movie material'.

Every time I see your posts and updates I'm thinking: 'now THIS is movie material'. It's a story about someone who is never, ever going to give up. A story about a knight with a true warrior spirit who will not accept defeat even if the path that must be followed is far from easy. And if there is no path, he'll create one because this will power knows no bounds.

And as you might have noticed, the entire audience is supporting the knight all the way through the trials and tribulations. They are all rooting for him, all the time.

MgKnight : Just a short note to let you all know that I am still fighting the fight. This one has been a bit more difficult than the first, but none the less, I will still come out the winner.

Surgery is done, as well as another round of radiation and chemo therapy. I have had so much radiation now that my radiant personality will never need recharging again. No, I have yet to begin to glow in the dark yet though.

I am now in process with physical therapy. Apparently a nerve was damaged during surgery that caused a muscle in my neck/shoulder to atrophy to near nonexistance. Lifting my left arm is a real task these days. Hopefully it too will be repaired in time.

Some time in the future I am going to get started with speech therapy and with any luck learn how to eat real food again. No food is the worst part at this point. I do not hole a lot of hope for that to change, but will find a way if there is one.

I still think of you all daily, though much of my time is spent sleeping. Thank you all again for your support through my battles.
