Re: CDV vs CDP Cant choose long distance operatior with CDV but you were able to with CDP which is the reason I went back to the ILEC. |

 | While I understand going forward with new technology, I get annoyed that companies aren't forced to support their older technology at all. I don't know about Comcast, but for instance, I am unable to send faxes on my Viatalk VOIP. What about people that rely on services such as those.
I may be a bit prejudice, but companies that abandon their "older stuff" (which is usually a couple years old at best) annoys me. I still fume about the whole DVI?HDMI issue, as someone that bought a "state of the art" big screen a few years back with only component input, only to find out less than a year later that DVI was replacing component and that component wouldn't be supported... |

 | True, but telephones and telephone service are not a substantial capital investment like an advanced TV set is. |

| reply to boober321 Faxing and 56k dialup connections work just fine on my Time Warner VOIP (similar technology to CDV).
I bought a "state of the art" Mitsubishi HDTV in 1998. It only had a proprietary HDTV input. Thank god someone figured out how to enable the RGB terminals in the service menu.
I wouldn't stress over the DVI issue. Component won't die nearly as quickly as Hollywood would like it to. There are way way too many HDTVs out there that lack HDCP input. |

 | reply to boober321 Faxing over VoIP can work. I've had Viatalk, Vonage, Packet8, and been able to fax over all of them. The trick is disabling echo cancellation / noise suppression / silence suppression for fax connections. The Sipura-based adapters usually have a * code (*99, I think was the default) that will do this. I use a Texas-Instruments chipset VoIP adapter which automatically senses fax/data tones and immediately drops all processing. I also find the Sipura adapters to have quite a bit of background noise, which probably doesn't help their performance, while the TI adapters are very quiet.
The longest fax I've sent was around 50 pages, longest I've received was about the same. |
