How to change wifi channel on the FiOS ActionTec router?

Hi,

The firmware on the FiOS-supplied ActionTec router is quite impressive, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to change the wifi broadcast channel. I've got a terrible S/N ratio according to NetStumbler, so I'd like to switch channels. Any suggestions on how this can be done?

Thanks,
grimholtz

Log in to your router. Select Wireless Setting then Basic Security Settings. Item #3 is the channel. Select the channel you want, then select Apply at the bottom of the page, et voila, you'll have your new channel. Good luck getting a better S/N ratio.

Grimholtz, Try channel 1 or channel 11 first and see what happens.
Avoid 6 and 9 as much as you can.

Thank you. I'm very aware of how to tune wifi routers.

You will not be tuning your wifi router, but merely instructing it to operate on a different frequency.

It is your wireless adapter that will be doing the tuning.

I will be instructing it to operate on a different frequency, which is the same as tuning it.

from »wordnet.princeton.edu/pe ··· n?s=tune

tune -- the adjustment of a radio receiver or other circuit to a required frequency

When you press the tune buttons on a digital radio, do you say "I'm telling the radio to tune itself" or do you say "I'm tuning the radio"? That's a rhetorical question.

Are you purposefully trying to be a smart*ss?

I was only trying to suggest "better channels" based on my knowledge and experience since some frequencies are shared, some are common to other devices and I have had a lot of luck with those 2 particular channels.

I appreciate that. Actually, I often use channels 13 & 14 (European and Japanese standards: see »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi ··· of_Wi-Fi) on my dd-wrt router (not Actiontec) to get the best S/N ratio. This is probably illegal so I don't leave it there regularly.

By the way, here's a screenshot of dd-wrt's channel selection in case you're interested: »img441.imageshack.us/my. ··· 7fw2.png

I tried the "illegals" myself but it caused more problems with some of my wireless adapters so I hover between 1, or 11.

My neighbors almost all have 6 and 9 selected.
