STB offline and serial port disabled

I am using a series 2 tivo with my verizon stb (standard). This morning, when I went to watch something on-demand, the stb showed up as offline. After four hours of messing with this and five calls to verizon, I still have no answer. Upstairs stb is online and VOB is working, but downstairs is not. Downstairs stb is also the one attached to tivo, which was working with the serial port for a few weeks now, but it's disabled now.

Any advice? I've gotten the stb rebooted through automated setup, rebooted the router, and even done the long reboot that takes 15-30 minutes (twice), and still nothing. Would the serial port's inability to work be related to this offline status? I saw someone with a similar problem whose offline status disabled VOB and guide, but no mention of serial port.

Thanks for any input-- i can go without VOB for now, esp. if they are working on a fix, but I would really like the serial port to work with the tivo, since the ir cable is sluggish and goes to the wrong channel 20% of the time. Please do not suggest i get the fios dvr; i have a lifetime sub for this tivo unit, and i will use it until it coughs its last breath.
