| Solutions to Phone Contracts - Prohibit Long Contracts. 1 Month Tops.
- Prohibit Subsidies, so yes, that means customers may need to pay full price. However, service rates will have to go down since the carriers are no longer subsidizing the phones. Even if one carrier won't, another will and the others will likely need to follow suit.
- Prohibit Phone Locking.
- Prohibit CDMA without RUIM (RUIM to CDMA is SIM to GSM). Ideally, you'd phase out CDMA since GSM is more widespread.
- Some people may not like the heartburn of paying $200 or more for a phone that used to be available for $0-$50 (with a contract). Okay, then offer a loan for a year, and let them pay monthly payments to buy the phone. The total cost of the loan payment and the service rate shouldn't cost more than the contracts we have now.
What I say sounds like something that should work. It's not radically different than how things are done in many countries. The only thing I made up is the loan to buy pricey phones idea, but I don't see why that can't work. |
