Is a supercomputer possible with a bot net and dis comp tech

Ok I see lots of talk on the net of different encryption technologies and how hard it is to break them.

So I had a left field thought. Would it be possible to combine a botnet and a distributed computeing technology. subverted to their needs, and create a super computer.

This would then greatly increase the bad guys abilities without spending a dime.

I hate to even mention this possibility because the thought may never have occured to them. I would feel terrible if my thought became reality.

Yes, it's possible, and no, you're not the first to have thought of it.

Here's the first mention of it I googled; I didn't really look hard.

The amount of work and loss of immediate revenue from a botnet that is no longer slinging spam, serving up phish, and keylogging credentials would make the possibility of someone turning a massive bot net, like the Storm herd, into a giant distributed computing monster, not very likely.

The losses, monetarily, would outweigh the gains in the short run, and the underbelly of the internet is really all about money now by and large.

There are those who would use that kind of power to attack something like encryption, but they aren't necessarily the guys who are spamming out nasties and building huge botnets.

Ya know Dave thats not really quite the answer I was hopeing for LOL I was hope ya would say no Danny your out in left field as usuall get some more foil fer yer hat or something. The thought that this is capaable and currently ongoing is disturbing to say the least.

The implications could be staggering.

Theoretically a botnet could be used for distributed computing, but this is not using it as a supercomputer. A supercomputer is *fast* and a botnet isn't. Distributed computing can solve some of the same problems as a supercomputer, but it is suitable only when the client can wait a relatively long time for results.
